I don’t think it’s “kids these days” or “society these days.” This was pretty normal in my public school from about 5th grade on, and my friends were the “unfailingly polite to teachers A and B students,” but when we weren’t around adults, all bets were off.

No, these kids behave that way to teachers too. Parents just ignore it.

I would have thought to myself they have really lousy hands off parents who cannot be bothered teaching them manners and walk away. I'd also tell my kids I'm proud they don't behave that way.

I don’t like any of those words either but I really don’t understand why you think it’s your job to tell people how to speak or what to say. Your job is to tell your own kids what you think and what your values are.

Cursing words are not that concerning to me (annoying that this was happening, yes, but eh, don't care that much).

Hateful words like the other F word you mentioned are completely inappropriate and not okay.

I called a kid a mother fer in kindergarten because he took my swing. I had heard the word in a movie my parents watched when I was supposed to be asleep. I curse a ton when I am around adults. I don't think I would address the f bombs or general cursing. But calling someone a slur is not ok. Depending on the situation I might say something

Three kids playing tennis nicely and using curse words - I would walk over and ask them to please stop with hate speech.

20 kids in the mall, probably not. Reason being there is more pressure for kids to react poorly in a large group and feel they need to save face.

+1 apparently my 4th grader already hears it at school. Their classmate curses at the teacher and it bothers the other kids.

I'd say, it's one thing to say Fu&k, it's another to use a derogatory term (the other F word). If you're going to curse, don't be a di*k about it.

Didn’t you do this in middle school? We sure did. We cursed up a storm! I am sure we sounded ridiculous and trashy. We are all 40 something productive citizens now.

If you want to next time, you can ask them to tone it down.

I would not do anything, the BB court is next to my house and there is cursing all the time.

I once asked the boys to be cognizant of who is around and pointed to my white son and said, you know if he repeats the n word at school they will think I taught it to him and they agreed that would be bad.

But I said it laughing/joking not nosy Nancy wagging my finger at them. I also ask them to pick up the trash and told them if they need to hide beer cans I will provide a trash bag.

I would have gone over there and told the little fagg%#s to shut the fuc% up.

I ended up in a conversation with one of DD's friend's yesterday who mentioned that it seems like in middle school everything thinks it's cool to curse. I said it's probably because it feels like a little bit of rebellion when the adults aren't around.

In a situation like OP's I've definitely said "hey guys, please not around the little ones" and have never had pushback in any setting.

This. If you approach it right (don't yell) they will often respond. Tweens and teens may be clueless, and misguided, and wrong, but even they can understand that what they're saying is not for younger ears.

Cursing is fine, but it’s obnoxious to do it in front of young kids/family. I would tell them to stop
