I think you've missed the point. Its not about the chocolates, its the opening of mail addressed to OP. Who opens someone else's mail at their house. Its a huge over step in boundaries. I would make sure you lock up anything you don't want her seeing as she obviously is a massive snoop.

I would not be comfortable leaving her alone either. If these were chocolates already open I would agree, who cares but mail could be anything and could be private or personal, not just chocolates.

Next time you visit the in-laws, open her mail and tell her about her bank details, see how she feels about that.

Opening a package addressed to OP is simply not OK. This isn’t finding a box of chocolates in the cabinet and eating a few.

It's really a rotten thing she did, OP.

But now you have a great story to tell! It's kind of hilarious when you think about it.

OP here. It’s the lack of boundaries that is bothering me—opening a package addressed to me is beyond. This will be her last time watching my kids without me around. She will never be alone in our house again. She has proven to be nosy and meddlesome and snoop-y before; this is the last straw.

Luckily we have no shortage of babysitters. My local aunt, my parents, my cousin, friends with whom we already swap overnight sitting duties, and a few trusted former daycare teachers. We didn’t need the “favor” from her; this was a way for she and FIL to spend quality time with the kids, which they ask for.

Oh well. She can’t be trusted alone in my house, so she never will be again.
