Likely because the Republicans tax bill changed the law so the EFC is no longer divided by the number of kids in school. Their family was probably expecting $90k divided by 3. I think a lot of parents will not be prepared for this. We have an income of $150K and not only do I expect to be full pay for both kids, it’s likely that the year they overlap, the EFC will total $80k

OP has four rental properties, in addition to a $350k salary. The FAFSA takes investment assets into account. We’re retired, and our AGI was under $150k last year, but our EFC was well into six figures, based on investment holdings (I only filled it out because one of DC’s schools requires it for merit aid).
