I think I would have been a very good journalist.

Unfortunately, it seems to be a dying professional in this country.

Also, as a scientist (which is what I became instead), I would have a hard time with the corners that must be cut to meet deadlines. I am thorough, and would worry alot about putting out any misinformation.

This is what I do! The major would be Geography or Cartography. What you’re describing is GIS, Geographic Information Systems.


Meant to add, even better major wise would be a degree in CS with a minor or double major in Geography.


FWIW, GMU has a degree called "Applied Computer Science" with emphasis on Geo-informatics.

This is essentially what my son is doing -- Computational Modeling & Data Analytics (basically a blend of CS & statistics) w/ a GIS concentration.

Can you elaborate a bit on the interesting jobs? My DS is an undecided freshman, and one of the classes he's taken so far that he's enjoyed is microeconomics. He may be interested in this path and asked me about it, but I wasn't sure what to tell him about careers, other than "economist". Which I can't even explain.
