Where did she end up going to?

DD ended up at WashU. It was hard to turn down the merit aid, but WashU was where she wanted to go. WashU's campus is beautiful. St. Louis weather is similar to DC. Easy flights to St. Louis - American and Southwest several times a day. Little concerned about St. Louis from a safety perspective, but the campus seems safe and well patrolled. The people are really nice and very collaborative which is what she was looking for and why she chose WashU. She also liked that kids from all over the US and the world attend WashU.

I can't say that there was an academic reason she did not select Case - it was really that she preferred the vibe at WashU and that Cleveland has cold, snowy winters.

My DD looked at both WashU and Case. Case gave her a lot of merit aid. WashU gave her 0. If you have a strong student 4.0+ and SATs above 1400, you will likely get offered a decent amount of merit aid. At WashU, 4.0+ and 1550 on the SAT gets you accepted with no merit aid.

My kid routinely gets multiple mailings from Case Western on the same day. Their marketing is out of control.

Marketing is not just mailing out fliers, they need to be better at recruiting.

It is historic. The land area was called western reserve (western most part of the US) before it was Cleveland. Northwestern gets it name for similar reason. They did try to brand it as Just Case but that failed.

OP: is it strongest for engineering/computer sciences?

The school DEFINITELY needs a better name. If it was Case University, it would be far more attractive. What's with Western? And how about Reserve? Odd. This school deserves a better name.

That seems to be contradicted by the volume of marketing materials they are sending out. Perhaps they just know Cleveland isn’t an easy sell.

How is Cleveland any different or worse than Pittsburgh or Indianapolis or Ann Arbor or any other mid western town/cities where some of the good colleges are located?
