No - I don’t bring a gift unless I really saw something that I really wanted to give the person.

I don’t want more crap. Really. If you bring me a vase or whatever, it’s going straight to goodwill. I don’t want chocolate. I don’t want wine.

I have a good friend who is always giving me gifts that I don’t want. I’m then put in an awkward position because I donate them, and for the next year I constantly get asked where the gift she got me is. Please don’t put your friends in that position.

If someone is hosting, they do not want to take time to deal with whatever crap you bring. If you must, send flowers ahead of time with a looking forward to celebrating with you tonight or seeing you tonight or whatever. But don't take them away from hosting to handle whatever crap you brought

Common courtesy is respecting someone's stated wishes. For example, I don't have space for another vase and it would be a burden to deal with it.

There are two possibilities:

1) They don't want a gift, and say so. If so, you really shouldn't bring a gift.
2) They want a gift, but for some reason lie to you to... I don't know, do something that they think makes themselves look better? If so, they really don't deserve a present.

Anyway no, I don’t bring a gift. It’s weird to assume that if somebody says no gifts they don’t really mean it. Maybe some cultures are like that but I think that generally speaking if somebody goes out of their way to ask you not to bring a gift, you shouldn’t do it.

I bring a small gift. I can’t not.
