$100K is not that much money to throw your child’s life away.
except wife's twitter feed indicates she was a neverTrumper. Hated the "Muslim ban." retweeted HRC's #notmypresident. She was not active on twitter, though. But, definitely not a Trumper. PhD in Anthropology from Emory.

Hmmm, PhD in Anthropology, valued educator at an elite private school presumably with her own child enrolled there. What could have made Diana Toebe be so stupid as to completely blow up her own life like this?

One theory I saw was that it’s France, they cooperated with the investigation, and that’s why they were so pissed off about the Australian deal.
France is an ally. I believe this idiot was stupid enough to hand it off to Russians, or try to, like that girl who stole Nancy Pelosi's laptop during the Jan. 6th riots.
The court papers say that in December 2020, an FBI official received a package that had been sent to the foreign country containing U.S. Navy documents, a letter and instructions for how to conduct encrypted communications with the person offering the information.
The letter in the package said: “I apologize for this poor translation into your language. Please forward this letter to your military intelligence agency. I believe this information will be of great value to your nation. This is not a hoax.”
It’s not Russia or China. The foreign country handed the package over to an FBI legal attaché in that country, which neither China nor Russia would do. The FBI also got assistance from the country’s embassy here, which neither Russia nor China would do.
Okay, so maybe a country that is 'lower' tier on the global scale but feels like I could get more from cooperating from the U.S. than in screwing it over? Korea? Maybe France could be right. But the traitor asked for the country to be prepared to get him and his wife out of the country in case they were discovered which would at least indicate there's no extradition let alone a ally that is super-interwoven with the U.S. in a NATO alliance.
An extradition treaty doesn’t mean the other country could be forced to extradite him, although it would be a big breach of foreign relations in this case. This guy made some pretty dumb mistakes in this whole affair, though, so I don’t know that he was thinking too hard about extradition treaties.

They plotted this for years. I bet the social media posts were part of it.

Agreed. They also asked for peanuts in terms of money. This is ideology driven. Will be interesting to see their internet history.

Jonathan and Diana will have to tell us.
Authorities say Jonathan Toebbe, who has a top-secret clearance, “has passed, and continues to pass, Restricted Data as defined by the Atomic Energy Act . . . to a foreign government . . . with the witting assistance of his spouse, Diana Toebbe,” according to a criminal complaint filed in West Virginia and unsealed Sunday.
