My child has blue hair and I love these comments because it reminds me that her hair is the perfect opportunity to teach my kid that people are going to judge you like crazy no matter what you do. Pleasing everybody is a game you’ll never win so don’t even try to play.

I think it would be a fun bonding project to do together! I dyed my hair all the time as a teen, it was so much fun to do at home (well, the home of whatever parent wasn’t home, because we weren’t allowed to and would get in trouble!). Even in my 20s I preferred dying my hair with friends than going to a salon.

It’s not too difficult. You can get boxed bleach and dye from the store now. You’ll need to bleach first and then dye it. Err on the side of caution with the bleach. Darker and thicker hair needs more time of course, but just periodically check on it while it’s bleaching. Use a less intense bleach if you can, no more than 30 volume (40 volume is super intense). It’s better to use less the first few times as you figure out the correct volume and time needed, rather than go overboard and break all the hair. Once that’s done, you put the purple dye on. Periodically check to see if the color has gotten deep enough, you can wipe off a little bit of dye to check and then smear some back on the wiped off area.

FWIW going to a professional doesn’t guarantee it won’t get damaged. The worst my hair was ever damaged was at a very high end, expensive salon, where they used a very intense bleach and left it on for too long. I had to barely touch my hair for months because it would break so easily.

Have fun! I haven’t had my hair dyed in years, not even highlights, I miss the fun we used to have with it.

I am still surprised every time I see this kind of vehement opinion about things other people do that have zero impact on their life. I am reading enough DCUM that I’m getting used to people not minding their own business, though.

OP have your kid choose a dark purple because it will fade into a nice light purple before it needs to be dyed again.
