Perhaps some chromebooks were left unlocked, but the reality is that even if you search for answers, it won't help you much.
Plus, the scoring is dynamic. The more questions you get right, the harder the questions get. But... only within the allocated time. If you spend all your time looking up answers, you will answer fewer and even if all answers are 100% correct you still get a lower score. The is a dumb story that lacks credibility.

Yeah the chrome books have software where the teacher can lockdown the browser so that students can't go anywhere on the internet but the test.
Sounds like either this is not true, or the teacher made a big mistake and didn't lockdown the browser.
But does the software works? Does it actually lock the browser or do they just say it to deter the kids? The incident is true and acc to my kid there was a whole thing with the teacher, parents and the principal
It actually locks. It is not a lie… in addition to the teacher locking the computers, the teacher must walk around and monitor without any distractions. On top of that, the teacher is being supervised by an additional adult in the room. I find the cheating to be highly unlikely
I don't find it unlikely that they'd try to cheat. I also don't find it surprising that the plan to prevent cheating worked.
I don't know how OP went from "someone tried to cheat on a test and got caught" to OMG people must be cheating rampantly!
Cheat on MAP-M? No. Not likely at all.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Why would a kid cheat on the MAP? If anything, a low score on a MAP is damning to the school, not the student. I don't know any kids under the illusion that MAP is like report card grades, SAT scores, etc. It's just not talked about the same way.
Completely agree. I didn't know people took MAP M so seriously or actually prepared for this MAP stuff till I came to DCUM. I thought it was a self evaluation tool. Why would a kid cheat on something like this? Asian parent here with both kids at magnets (pre lottery).

My son had no idea what they were talking about. I called the school and they were not aware of any disciplinary issues.

Anonymous wrote:OP are you sure that your kid isn’t trying to bully the smart kid in the class by spreading false rumors? Is your kid hyper competitive and wants to hide that he didn’t earn a high score so he’s telling you that the others cheat? Are you one of the parents who says studying math outside is cheating and using racist terms like tiger mom to dismiss Asian Americans who achieve high scores? Maybe your kid picked up on this and is trying to be like you.

I asked several times and he said no (but he lies at times—particularly, when it comes to screen time. And yes, we have been working on it). So, it sounds like students can actually cheat? I did not see DS cheating or anything, but I was always wondering how he was able to get good grades without putting in much effort!
Students can cheat, but not the way OP described because of the software. However, cheating on MAP M is limited because the test adjusts so it gets harder and harder. A student could hypothetically cheat using their cellphone and last year, students got help from parents.
