There are a couple people whose persinalities don't match with mine but we are pleasant and cordial to each other. There is one person who outright doesn't like me and is extremely rude. Dh's friend's wife just hates me. Unfortunately for her, all the other wives and husbands like me and her actions have only alienated her. Dh only gets together with his friend without the wife because of how she treats me.

My MIL doesn’t like me. It’s mutual now, but I honestly tried to like her and did, for some time. But in my own self interest, I had to go gray rock and set some boundaries, then she decided to attempt to overstep and actually climbed over these boundaries.

She very publicly shouted (more accurately: shrieked) at me and attempted to spell out every recent frustration she’d had with me. Did I mention this was public? After my DC’s youth sports event?

This was over a decade ago, but a defining moment for me: I stopped trying to curry her favor, or to ever be alone with her.

I’m unfailingly polite to her. Never rude. Quiet. I listen and add benign comments (really? oh? Sure! Ok. Awww. Yes.) and answer any questions asked of me.

She also now knows nothing about me-that is-unless DH tells her. I’m kind of a boring robot in front of my MIL and I’ll admit that I have to see her too often and feel anticipatory anxiety.

The funny thing is, I’m a funny, loving, sweet person who’s won accolades for my customer service and sales records. I can talk to anyone!

I actually think MOST people don't like me and I'm 100% fine with that. Anything else, is a bonus.

OP I think you can't change it, move on. My SIL is my DH's older sister and for me there were status issues. I was expected to fall-in with regards their family hierarchy. But I'm actually 2 years older than she is and the eldest in my family. DH and I met in our early 30s, not a time for me to consider falling in line with anyone else's way of doing things. We also don't speak. Ever.

My MIL hates me. I know it is because I am not a far right, religious zealot. The ironic part is that neither is she, she just tries to play the role and fails miserably. I would honestly have more respect for her if that is who she actually was instead of the fake person she truly is.

She comes to our house, doesn’t even acknowledge me, doesn’t even say hi. I think it is funny.

It’s not normal. There’s obviously something off with her. The moment she showed the capacity for cruelty and bullying I would have written her off and stopped giving a F, because I don’t allow people like that in my close orbit. I also would have stood up for myself. I’ve been called ”too nice” but when someone is overtly unkind or disrespectful, I don’t bite my tongue. I wouldn’t curse them out in front of the family but I might say something like, “there’s no reason to be unkind, Paula.”
