I think the idea is that these are nicknames. The child's name would be the same as his dad and grandfather's. These are nicknames that mean "the third". Trey, in particular, used to be popular among Southern families, though I don't hear it as much lately.
Yes, I realize that Trey and Trace are nicknames for the third, I’m just saying that it seems way too cutesy to me. It also seems outdated and something a boy would find embarrassing as he gets older.
I have a cousin whose parents did this to him and he hates it, but feels stuck with the name now because he doesn’t want to use the same first name as his dad or grandfather. He wishes someone had told his parents not to do this.
