Why didn’t you just move to a more affordable nyc suburb? and yes they exist - many commutable areas of NJ are less expensive than DC and its immediate suburbs.

Im thinking of maplewood. Too friends moved their and love it! Great sense of community

I grew up in WestChester ny and lived in nyc for 15 years post school. I moved here for govt work. Couldn’t be happier. My kids were born in NUC but have basically lived here their whole lives. I go back to WestChester to visit my family a few times a year… we even did an extended stay for 2 months this summer b/c covid and telework. It was great! We had fun nights out in the city! But I really like dc and being so close to nature and the city too. No it’s not nyc but there’s a lot of cool things around. Need a quick weekend trip? Charlottesville, Richmond, etc etc etc are all way more accessible than the Hudson valley etc. overall I’m pretty happy. May return to nyc some day who knows. But not while kids are school aged.
