Republicans have always wanted to shut down the government. So they did it. Fox News hate stories about the Federal Government being reopened. The Dems are happy the government is shut down because the Federal government is being used to arrest and imprison democrats.

It is a good thing the US Military, DHS, FBI, DOJ, ICE, etc are not getting a paycheck. All those organizations and the people in them have declared war on Blue states and democrats.

If the Dems don’t want it opened it will remain closed. Hope it causes a lot of pain.

Republicans passed a CR in the House.

It's democrats who decided not to vote for it in the Senate.

Fact: Republicans did not shut down the government.

Democrats are required to vote for whatever the house passes?

They don't have to vote for it, but they can allow it to be brought up for a vote. Still unclear why this 60 vote threshold is there. I thought all budget bills are no filibuster.

That said, Republicans gain by having Democrats not vote for it, since they get to fire lots of federal workers and downsize the government.

Why, almost everyone is working? Private industry is not hiring, so it’s not like people will quit if not paid. The labor market is frozen.

??

No one cares across America because 70% of Feds are still working with withheld pay.

What are those Feds going to do, find another job? There are no jobs especially for former Feds. They can sick out I guess, but risk a retaliatory RIF. Democrats will likely fold after Nov 1 when ACA premiums are paid, and having made their point it may make the news that the clean CR finally passed.

The enhanced ACA subsidies are not paid in November. Enrollment begins November. People have to enroll but won’t know the price tag of what they are buying. Payment would start January.

Trump wants this shutdown, why?
1. Prevents Epstein files from release.
2. No jobs or economics reports to reveal unemployment, recession, inflation.
3. Makes him the focus of attention.

Military and ICE are getting paid. MAGA doesn’t care about anything else.

Again, military only getting paid once. That’s it. After Nov 1, there is no hope if paycheck.

Sounds like Democrats are stupid to give Trump what he wants by not voting for the current bill.

The entire point of Republicans shutting down the government and not paying federal employees is because they want to destroy the Affordable Care Act. They very well know that increasing premiums by a 100 percent will force people off health insurance. And Republicans love that. Because Republicans are not good people.

I think this shutdown will last a long time. Republicans control everything - the House, the Senate, the White House, the Supreme Court. They seem very determined to deny health care to Americans who don't work for the government or a Fortune 500 company. Because Republicans are... unpleasant human beings.

In the end, once air traffic controllers go two months without being able to pay the mortgage and are forced to become UberEats drivers to sustain their families, it'll stop. Banks don't give a damn if you are federal employee. They'll take your house in a heartbeat.

This country shuts down when you can't move. The air traffic controllers are the ones who will decide when this stupidity ends. And meanwhile, these air traffic controllers and other essentials need to figure out how to live.

I cannot begin to express how much I loathe Mike Johnson and his swarmy cynicism.

They want to destroy ACA but don't have anything to replace it. Trump promised a "great" plan that would "cover everyone" all the way back in 2015. Where is it? When he got elected again for his second term, he was asked, and all he said was that he has a "concept of a plan" - in other words, nothing.

If the Republicans force this and get their way it means millions of Americans will start seeing huge price increases and will likely lose their health insurance. And a majority of those people are in red states, Trump voters. Trump and Johnson and Thune and the rest are throwing millions of their own biggest supporters under the bus.

the reason the GOP doesn't have a replacement is because the ACA is the GOP solution. The problem is that it was passed by Obama and the dems.

Obamacare is a GOP solution?

Not one republican voted for it.

The ACA was based on "Romneycare" in Massachusetts:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_health_care_reform

Romneycare was based on a framework designed by think tank wonks at the Heritage Foundation in 1989:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2011/10/20/how-a-conservative-think-tank-invented-the-individual-mandate/

Don't care what you think it was based on. It was a couple of thousand pages to subsume 1/6th of the American economy.

It has been a disaster. We spend close to 17% of our entire GDP on health care. Much more than any other country.

Then you imported several million poverty cases and added them as beneficiaries. Enough!

Trump is too busy sending $20B of US taxpayer money to Argentina so they can fund their own universal healthcare system.

Why do you think people in literally every other developed country work, since they have universal health insurance?

It was MedicAID. So many people are on some kind of publicly funded healthcare, we might as well get universal healthcare for everyone.

Well, it was born out of an idea proposed by the Heritage Foundation and implemented by Republican governor Mitt Romney in Massachusetts. The crafting of the bill was bipartisan - Republican senators Mike Enzi, Chuck Grassley and Olympia Snowe were involved. But when it came time for a vote, Republicans decided there was no reason to vote for it since any success would be attributed to Obama. This allowed people to push the misleading narrative that Democrats rammed the ACA through with no input from the GOP, but the fact is that some Republicans voted against a bill they themselves had helped write.

Other countries spend less on healthcare due to various versions of universal healthcare. If that is what conservatives want to do, let's go.

However, do not bemoan the cost of healthcare in the US vs. other countries without acknowledging how other countries provide it for lower cost.
