Look. Wakefield never has a competitive team because girls lacrosse is an elitist north arlington sport. Starting with the arlington rec program, the sport is exclusively a north arlington game. All recruitment, all practices are in n arlington and only when the league needs game fields do they step foot
In south arlington. The county reinforces this by ignoring the middle schools
In south arlington by not providing goals for practice- all the fields in n arlington have goals on field- but ya can’t find one save two on the Wakefield
Campus albeit with holes in the net.

The lack of equity of play in the game is significant- by the time girls get to high school it is too late to start and be competitive with fx and n arlington students who have been playing for a decade both at rec and in club play.

Someone has a serious chip on their shoulder. Sounds like sour grapes. What the heck is “equity of play”? Take your politics elsewhere. Equality of opportunity the rest is up to the player. Nothing stopping those girls from signing up for rec lax at an early age.

^^^^ this statement is exactly what is wrong with the sport. The fact that this poster doesn't understand equity of play is indicative of the state of affairs. Period.

What a joke SR and PVI would crush them

Yes the WP sports reporters don’t know a thing about girls hs lacrosse and the rankings clearly show that. WP in this case is not to be respected.

They highlight SSSA and Yorktown always because they are so not with the current vibes in Dc metro lacrosse. I mean who cares that Jenny tran had an acl injury does that mean her team gets empathy votes because she can’t train with them ?? And so tired of Kathy Jenkins. Boring.

Kathy Jenkins is one of the most respected coaches in the game of girls lacrosse for decades. She has won numerous championships, been nationally ranked, and graduated many athletes to play in top college programs.
No other coach has matched her entire coaching career’s success in the DMV. That is FACT.

Thank you for your insecure opinion about TWP rankings #teamKJforever

OK SSSA parent. Yes, she has been around the block but let's have news stories on NEWS not on an old coach rebuilding her elitist school's club team.

SSSA is elitist? That’s news to me. So you pay money and that makes your school elitist. KJ is overrated. The school attracts the talent based on their history. Has nothing to do with the coach. Put KJ in charge of Wakefield and let’s see how she does there. Same reason why Bucky left Langley, he left when he saw the incoming talent was falling off.

+1 - 100 percent concur with this assessment. Wakefield might have a couple of club players on its team, while many (most? I'm not sure) of the players on Yorktown's team also play club. W-L also has a bunch who play on club teams. It makes a huge difference in terms of skills, obviously.

Unfortunately, this is the current sad state of high school sports. And it’s only going to get worse. In many cases if you don’t play club (and parents willing to pay the ante) from an early age, you’ll have no chance of competing at the high school level. There was a time when rec and the school programs were all the kids needed to be competitive.

I don’t understand why privates are grouped with publics. It’s a completely different playing field. Privates can and do consistently recruit top players from the NoVa area, that’s why they have good teams from year to year. Publics get what they get and if they are fortunate to get a group of excellent players who stick with their HS for 4 years they can do well, i.e. Langley.

Must be some good explanation for the laid an egg of the year award for Yorktown. That’s a drubbing…

I don’t think it’s as much a case of Yorktown laying an egg as it is Dominion is just a good team. No one should be surprised by this result. Riverside is down this season, but they and Dominion have consistently beaten Class 6 schools in the past. This will probably be Dominion’s last hurah, but they have a great chance to win four state championships in a row. Sadly lacrosse participation is falling off for these smaller schools to the point they can no longer field JV teams and if they can they sometimes play 7v7. Varsity teams are filled with students who want to play a sport but have little to no lacrosse experience. Riverside has played almost their entire season without their goalie and has had JV players fill in or defenders turn goalie over night. Hopefully participation climbs for these Class 4/5 schools and more players get involved with club lacrosse. Don’t sleep on Dominion this year. They are a good team, execute well, and have some talented college-bound players.

Agree. Some solid talent with Dominion seniors this year. I don’t think Yorktown has any seniors who are playing college lax in the fall.

Yorktown couldn't win a draw and had no answer for stopping the Dominion cutters. Dominion either scored easy goals or got a dozen 8 meter shots.

From what I heard, Dominion won almost every draw and had at least a dozen or more 8 meter shots with multiple attempts. Dominion is a good team with a good goalie. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Is Centreville back to full strength after a tough run with injuries?

Going to be a good game. We’re going out to catch this one, hope they have BBQ.

Centreville should win this game by 3 or 4 goals but South Lakes could keep this "Close but no Cigar".

"Its origins back in the 1920s when carnivals would hand out cigars as prizes. These games were obviously targeted at adults and not children. Carnival games were very difficult to win and the stand owner would simply shout the phrase when the player miserably failed to win. Hence no cigar as a reward."

Don't have the Arlington expertise to comment on the above, and the tone is intense, but the PP brings up a very important issue that I think we have to work on as a community--drawing in more minorities and lower-income athletes into girls lacrosse. Lacrosse is an expensive sport. From the equipment (good stick over $300 now), to leagues and clinics, and certainly for club/travel teams. And to the poster's point, if there are no goals, it's hard to do much to work on your game.

I don't profess to have the answers, but I believe those of us who enjoy the game and what it does for our daughters, and sit comfortably in HS pyramids that have good lacrosse feeder programs, have a responsibility to try and improve access for other. The results will benefit the community, the sport, and maybe make a difference in some young people's lives.
