Because the Dems won’t bring up debate on border wall unless forced to. Dems never compromise.

BS. They compromise all the time. So do Republicans. It's gotten harder for both sides, but it does happen from time to time. It happened last month until Trump blew it up.

Gridlock in Washington is what Trump was elected to fix. All he's done is make it worse.

Gridlock is specifically what Putin wanted Trump to cause in order to destabilize the only country that could challenge Russia. Trump is doing exactly what his main constituent helped get him elected to do. First chaos in the government, and now helping to destabilize the economy. He's also done a great job making sure Europe knows America is no longer a reliable partner. I'd say Putin is getting exactly what he wants.

Putin aside, the base thought they were voting for a great dealmaker. But they should admit he can't deal his way out of a paper bag.

A temporary DACA extension is worthless. All it does is kick the can down the road, it doesn’t solve anything.

Yes it does. It moves it into the next president's court, and thus the people decide via their votes.

And besides, Democrats can't hold out for the "ideal" - they need to settle for a big improvement. If they keep the govt shut down if it comes down to the DACA issue, they'll look like they have their priorities upside down (like last time).

This 1000xs! How hard is this to understand? We did. It elect a dictator although trump and his supporters think he is.
You are missing the Dems’ real point, which is that this isn’t how any kind of deal should be done. Funding the government is supposed to be a simple administrative process that happens without much fanfare to then let the government do the actual work of debating things like walls and DACA. Holding the government hostage to get something you couldn’t otherwise get through the standard legislative process because you don’t have enough support is an abuse of the process and of our system of government. That’s what the Dems are taking a hard line on, not DACA. Reopen the government, let it function the way it’s supposed to, and then negotiate the wall the proper way.

Thank you DP for re-stating this. Shutdowns are no way to legislate, and Trump said he was proud to own this one. If Dems give in this way, Trump will use a shutdown every time he wants something over the next 2 years.

At some point the business community, specifically airlines and food industry, will have to weigh in. This is becoming a serious liability for them.

This. She is wealthy and doesn’t give a fig except sticking it to Trump.

It is appalling that members of Congress and their lame staff get paid.

+1. I cannot believe that the Dems have the gall to adjourn the House, not to mention leave Washington altogether, while the shutdown crisis remains unresolved. They should be in Washington, negotiating around the clock. Say what you will, but the President was in Washington on Christmas Day, New Year’s, and this holiday weekend ready to talk. Where have Chuck and Nancy been? Hawaii, San Francisco, New York, and everywhere but at their posts. I hope furloughed feds are taking notice!

Where's Mitch, honey?

Look, Mitch IS NOT BRINGING ANY BILL TO THE FLOOR FOR A VOTE WITHOUT THE WALL FUNDING.

Trump is playing hardball and made starting offer on DACA, against wishes of his conservative base. Are the Dems just going to keep asking “Where’sMitch?” “Where’s Mitch?” Like a bunch of preschoolers? What are the Dems going to offer up, except whine all day about how Trump is so unfair? They don’t know how to negotiate.

Why would they give $5.7 billions for a temporary extension of DACA, when DACA is already tied up in the courts so dreamers aren't being deported for now anyway? Trump isn't offering amnesty or a permanent solution, why should Dems agree to that? You were fine when Trump refused to sign a bill that unanimously passed the Senate (and the White House had agreed to) because Rush and Ann Coulter said no. Why are you so outraged that the Dems are sticking to no wall just like he's sticking to there must be funding for the wall.

DP. Dems are acting as if $5 billion for the wall is such a horrible thing that they need to extract more in "return" for it. In what universe it a bad to approve a relatively small amount for a barrier so that we can deter illegal aliens?

You do realize that the $5 billion is only for a fifth of the wall and that if they cave on this he'll keep
holding important things hostage in order to get the other $20 billion, right?

I know that's what YOU think, because you consider govt workers hostages.

if anything, the Dems are keeping the govt closed because they won't OK $5 billion to help deter illegals. What Bizzaro World is this? They are so intent on rolling out the red carpet for illegals that they'd rather see govt workers go without pay than make it hard for illegals.

And where is Pelos's counteroffer? I haven't seen it. She said NO to Trump's olive branch before he even stated it. PPs who have said that public sentiment will turn against the Dems if she doesn't make a counteroffer are correct.

No comment on the fact that $5 billion is just the first installment? That there's another $20 billion ask coming down the pike?

Yeah. This is a hostage negotiation pure and simple. And there is no reason to believe that if the Democrats give in to these terrorists this time, the Republicans won't pull this stunt again. And again. And again.

Here’s an idea. Next week-Atlanta airport, full walk out
TSA, Ari traffic controlers, airlines keep their planes grounded in solidarity until our go. Works as stipulated by Constitution.
This means McConnell brings to floor.
Then we see where GOP Senators stand and Trump can veto (making Ann happy) or sign.

Anonymous wrote:This is completely crazy.

Funding for federal employees has nothing to do with immigration.

Wall, border security, DACA, TPS, immigration judges etc etc. is about immigration. So, this government shutdown is truly a hostage situation.

McConnell must open the government and then Democrats and Republicans can debate merit of both sides views and proposals on immigration. It would actually be a negotiation only then.

At this point it is mostly open - they just aren’t paying the people they are recalling to work and of course they are making them work without support staff. Agency after agency has been asked to recall workers in response to pressure from lobbyists and in the interest of minimizinged the pain to people who might vote.
Agencies without powerful/ wealthy allies (EPA, Smithsonian, regulatory agencies) are likely to stay closed for as long as the shutdown continues. So for example, the IRS has recalled 46,000 workers to help process refunds but the workers who scrutinize dodgy returns are still furloughed

TSA is the weak link. It's just not good enough of a job to keeping working for free and as they start dropping out, it's going to be really noticeable.

Recruiting blueshirts for the TSA was already hard enough. It is a federal job without federal benefits; the hours are not consistent in most US cities and the pay is ok, but not great. I am going to posit that if this isn't solved soon, there will be cities, particularly in rural areas, where the airports will be negatively impacted for some time.

I broke into your house, stole 57 dollars and your stamp collection and am now demanding you give me $100 in exchange for allowing you to look at your stamp collection once per month for 2 years.

How is that a fair exchange or action?
