I live in CA. ALL national forests to visitors. The closure started on 8/23 and has been extended to 9/17. This has nothing to do with that family.

This forest was closed on Sunday 8/22, one day before the other forests were closed.

Read the link. They closed this forest because of unknown hazards that killed the family. One day later, lots of other nearby parks are closed due to fire.

This park was closed due to something that killed this family.

So maybe heat exhaustion and they see the cold water and get in even with the warning about the algae and that makes them die? I wonder what authorities are hypothesizing they think it must be an added element there

Probably a combination of heat, algae, and preexisting health conditions. The mom said she left a career in the tech field 3 years ago after being diagnosed with a “debilitating health condition”.

I think they closed it partly because of fires and heat. The algae just makes a great excuse.

I thought heat exhaustion did not make sense at first. But the more I read about the trail, lack of shade and people experiences, it seems more and more like the family got over ther head - either did not plan right, a person or dog got injured and slowed them down, and then they tried to rest. And the wife/mom realized they were in trouble too late. I bet the bad air quality was also a factor. My guess is they closed the areas to protect people from venturing out to see what the trails are like in response to the news stories. People are weird like that, and if avid hikers can die in these conditions, novice hikers would be in real danger.

The people I know that do hard core hiking get a sat phone for hikes when they will be out of range. It seems like this family didn’t even have emergency flares. Maybe they had something like the emergency whistle or beam but if there no one around those won’t really help you.

There are big signs posted around the Grand Canyon warning people that the hike back up will take twice as long as the hike down, so if you want a three hour hike, turn around after one hour. Many people do not account for that. It sounds like this hike was similar in that the hard part was all at the end.

If anyone has ever been a boy or Girl Scout, they spend a lot of time teaching kids about appropriate gear and preparedness for outdoor activities. It’s really important to think this stuff through. We live such coddled lives that we forget how deadly nature is. And it’s getting deadlier every year.

I can't believe it, but I find myself slowly changing my hard and fast stance on FA. Perhaps it was a hazard in the area--I thought that was a such a stupid theory. I need to do better about always thinking the worst about people!

The poor family. An unknown hazard killed them. So quickly and probably unavoidably.
