Exactly. They aren't out there hunting anyone down. They are showing up to scheduled immigration hearings - you know, the PROCESS that these people go through to become LEGAL - and detaining them there.
That's about as noble as big game hunters who go on safari to animal parks where the animals are bred in captivity to be shot by rich white people.
Both are pathetic. If you're an ICE agent who wants to get the bad illegals out, why aren't you out there doing it? Why are you standing outside of an immigration court to grab every brown person who exits?

DS' best friend's older brother was deported. He had DACA and it was time for his 2-year renewal. He was out of the country for 4 days before he made it back.
Also, this older brother is his caretaker here in the US. DS' best friend is a US citizen. He was born here and has only lived here. His father passed many years ago and his mother (not a US citizen) left the US about 3 years ago to care for ill relatives. When the oldest brother told the agents about his minor US citizen brother, nothing was done. No one contacted the brother. Older brother has no criminal record and is/was? enrolled in community college and has/had? a fulltime job. So now the older brother *is* back here illegally. I have no idea what will happen on that front as his DACA protections are gone, I suppose. The younger brother will graduate in a few weeks and turn 18 in July. I told DS he can offer to let his friend stay with us until he goes to college this fall.
Entering again after being deported makes him a felon. Hope he has always wanted to visit Rwanda. Because that is where he could end up.

It changes the risk/reward calculation for people trying to enter the country. Who will pay a thousand dollars to be taken across the border, if they will end up in jail for 30 days and sent back?

And at any point, the alien can abscond (many do). They are a non-priority, especially in “sanctuary” states and counties.
That is because the Constitution mandates due process for anyone on US soil, regardless of their citizenship or status. Like it or not, deal with it. It's the frickin Constitution.
Now that said, there have been repeated efforts, going back to Obama (and I'm sure prior) to clear the backlog by having more judges and courts and resources to hear and adjudicate the cases to determine whether they should be deported, et cetera. But guess what - it's the Republicans who have staunchly and steadfastly refused to allow any additional funding or resources for that.
Due process for deportations is different than due process for criminal cases.

With the criminal investigation, they can get IRS data for easy location.
This seems stupid. Trump's intent is to prosecute them regardless of whether they register or not. So again, why should they bother registering?
I've been asking this question. Best answer I have seen is that it is now a federal felony, instead of a civil crime, and allows the government to use the IRS.
