What can one possibly do to have this terrible accident serve as a deterrent to other kids? other parents who condone drinking? Is there anything?
Have them watch the clip in one of the previous links, that should make a huge impact.
Kids watch this stuff all the time. They see it in health class at school. It gets discussed often from 6th grade forward. But, no, it doesn't just sink in. Teenagers are impulsive and don't think clearly when they are with friends and it's even worse when they are impaired by alcohol or drugs.
So what can stop them? This is my neighborhood. I know what many of the kids are doing and it's not pretty.
Parents can start discussing the sad reality, and stop hosting/allowing attendance to the parties.
Every time you know where there's going to be a party, just give the address to the cops to check on... if you care. If there are high school kids, I guarantee you, there's underaged drinking. Otherwise no one will go. Trust me.
Dumb question but how can you do this anonymously these days? There are no phone booths anymore.
If only one parent cared enough to let the cops check on that party, so much senseless tragedy would have been spared.
You can be anonymous.

Of course some kids don't drink, nor do they party.

Let's talk about alcohol prevention and teen driving.
Why doesn't this happen in Germany where kids can legally have a beer at 16 without their parent and 13 with their parent?
We've hosted numerous German APs and NONE of them have been interested in getting drunk and are shocked to learn that Americans drive with even a drop of alcohol in their bodies.
The problem IS alcohol prevention and the solution is drinking responsibly because drinking WI'LL happen and kids are given no guidance and parents are allowing these children with no guidiance to drink in their homes. It is all one big circle jerk.
Drunk driving happens in Europe among young people. Most young people though don't have access to cars, etc.:

You don't know much about Germany and driving. They are not rule breakers. Drunk driving is extremely uncommon. As a matter of fact, I hire Germans because of their meticulous rule following and the fact that every one I have hired has had her own car, thus lots of driving experience.
OMG! I hired German aupairs because they were the best drivers. It is much harder to get a license in Germany. But those girls could party... and they should they are young. OMG! The way they dress... one aupair told me her mom said, you sneak out the back when you dress to go out, no woman needs another woman dressing like that in her house. They were sweet though and tough, but unfortunately all the bar flies can spot a German aupair a mile away. We paid for cabs, because drinking responsibly was not an option... and I did not want her drinking and driving.
Odd. You are a mom and you know the bar flies at the local bars and they tell you this? Were you a teen mom? Or are you single hitting up the bar scene?
I'm 40 and couldn't name a single bar fly and I live in Arlington, a walk to many bars. My knowing the characters in the local bars were over about 13 years ago.
