It would be nice to have a performing arts school but the arts aren't at Duke Ellington which is an issue. Most of the high performers are in private groups. I wouldn't send my high-performing kids to an arts magnet without the academics.

Baltimore School for the Arts, LaGuardia Hugh School in NY

We are so behind here. They will have APs at Woodward and yes there will be enough kids to populate those. And guess what - colleges love kids who do performing arts. They actually aren’t looking for every kid who takes multi variable calculus and does nothing else.

these kids end up living in their parent's basement. get real people.

Stop making stuff up.

What a ridiculous question. Arts magnet is the most useless magnet a school can get. Completely pointless. Only a handful arts magnet students will end up working in arts since society doesn't need hundreds of thousands art majors. This is only excuse for lazy kids and parents to feel they are doing something special while trying to avoid real subjects, subjects that prepare you for life.

And why is Woodward less deserving than other schools? What exactly makes schools more deserving than others?

In the meantime, Kennedy in that region is supposed to get real magnet (IB) but no parents in other schools will send their kids in such low performing school to attend completely unproven magnet. So it will end up being just Kennedy students, making that otherwise meaningful magnet, also pointless.

None of these magnets are real magnets as Mcps is not adding teachers or giving more funds.

smoke and mirrors "magnets" will still waste money

Not really as they are not getting any extra staffing or funding for needs. They will offer the same thing the school aready offers.

yes really. they will take away resources from teaching important subjects such as math, science. isntead it will be pottery and acting.

Theater is important. Never seen a school with pottery. That would be nice too. Its not taking it away. There should be enough funding given the per pupil amount MCPS has for all of it.

A lot of very successful alumni from Einstein Performing Arts program and VAC. However, it’ll take Woodward a while to catch up to Einstein and Blake.

Not with a good teacher and funding. Most of the kids take outside classes and groups so they will succeed regardless of the teacher because of the outside resources. A good teacher can make or break a class, and some kids can start in HS and do very well but they have to catch up to the kids doing it for years. Any HS that has a strong program isn't doing it on its own.

The smarter orchestra and music kids take AP and advanced math and science classes.

Yes, colleges love kids who do performing arts. Assuming those kids are strong academically. Blair orchestra is best in the county. But it is because it is full of STEM magnet kids. We are ruining established magnets that attract talented kids, while creating dozens of highly specialized magnets that are not needed.

Blair has a good orchestra as it draws the magnet kids in and has a really good teacher. Its not really good because of school, but those kids have been taking private lessons and in private orchestras.

MCPS will continue to shoot itself in the foot and use our money to do so. Colin Kaepernick and crew will tell Taylor how to run the place.

They are also not looking for kids that took extra art classes in some unknown "arts magnets" and are lacking basic classes in math, science and humanities.

So let's see: we are getting six new arts magnets with no new teachers and resources, placed at random schools throughout the county. I am sure entertainment industries in LA and NY will be set for decades.
