You used to be able to see the staff listing and photos on the NCRC website but it’s all hidden behind passwords since the website redesign last year. Interesting decision. Who else did JC hire while he was there. The “mindful movement” guy? The director of the summer program? Both men.


My daughter had both of these teachers at NCRC on a teaching team, and it was one of the best years of her education. She learned and grew as a person in incredible ways, and our family remains so grateful to them for that unbelievably wonderful year. She has since gone on to have more male teachers than female teachers in her following years at a different school, and they have all been fantastic.

The two men you mentioned are salt of the earth human beings who care so much about education and the community. We are so lucky to have them teaching our kids. How dare you call out these people you don’t know? It is harmful to them and harmful to male teachers more broadly, not to mention incredibly uninformed and sexist.

For the record—James Carroll did not do any hiring. Find a forum where you actually know something about the topic and participate there, but leave our wonderful NCRC teachers alone.

The male teachers help. The bathroom doors at NCRC are always open and never shut which was to make it safer. Now with news of James it seems weird thinking about how kids were always visible going to the bathroom during drop off (if you walked your kid into class.) However, I don't ever remember seeing James in a classroom

Not an NCRC parent but have had a male pre-K teacher. Our school had half doors on the bathrooms so no student was ever “alone” with any staff member, regardless of their sex.

I can’t imagine male teachers can just refuse to toilet a child, especially if no other teachers are free. When a 2-4 year old needs to go to the bathroom there’s not much time to wait, and it could be considered negligent to refuse and tell the kid no. More likely appropriate precautions are in place- no doors or half doors, two staff members can see the bathroom at all times, etc.

I’d imagine it even would be considered discrimination to say all female teachers need to handle all toileting needs, whereas male teachers cannot help at all. More realistically schools should have appropriate precautions in place so that no teacher is alone and unable to be seen with a child at any time.

We toured NCRC and I’m pretty sure I recall they don’t even have doors on their classroom bathrooms. I know at our school the classroom bathrooms have a very small half door so you can see faces and feet. The toilets are small and meant for little kids so most are able to toilet themselves.

In my kids preschools, female teachers were also not allowed to help. Children were expected to be potty trained and to be able to change themselves in case of accidents. I taught preschool Sunday school through Catholic Church and was not permitted to help with toileting—could not even enter the bathroom with them to help them wash the hands unless the door was propped open. I don’t think you are up to date on current child protection practices.

I mean, you’re talking about a small school circle that had not one but two really sick male child abusers at the same time. There are reasons to talk about the safeguarding necessary - and yes, for younger kids, that means men.

I understand that emotions are running high after what happened, and protecting children is vital, but it’s harmful to make blanket assumptions about male preschool teachers based on one individual’s actions. As a male early childhood teacher, I’ve experienced the unfair scrutiny and mistrust that arise from these stereotypes (former BVR teacher post scandal years ago) and it not only hurts male educators but also discourages men from entering a profession that benefits from diverse role models for young children. Instead of targeting an entire group, focus should be on holding individuals accountable and creating systems of transparency and accountability.
