Janet McReynolds own statement to police put her by the spiral staircase on 12/23. That was next to where the pad of paper was left. She could have taken it home with her along with the pen and brought it back the night Jon Benet was killed. The play she wrote Hey Rube was based on an actual case about a girl that was tortured by a woman and her children and teenagers. The actual case was sickening. The Daily Camera stated Janet McReynolds said " It would sound very quaint now. It was a 70's play written for its time". I don't think there is anything quaint about it.

Because if the intent was to stage this as a kidnapping they had to make it seem like a sexual crime. They had to make it seem real. Lead the police away from the family because why would a family member do this? Was the goal. If a kidnapper was after their child would that kidnapper have left her unviolated?
Think about it, if they were going to take the body out of the house they would've left it likely in a field or wooded area or some place like the horrible real kidnappers do. Most if not all violate their victims. They were able to tell this was not a real assault according to CBS detectives and investigators because it was simply laid there and not used to violate in the usual way. Clearly the person who laid it in there did not intend to cause any harm as a real perp would have done. The stager didn't actually do this in a way a real perp would have in other words without being graphic.

PP's theory is a good one. Patsy probably found her in the basement, and that was the horrible scream everyone heard. I think maybe he hit her on the head down there though. Don't know that the pineapple has to have caused the squabble.
I think Burke probably did go back to bed and never admitted what he did, in part because the parents spent a lot of time convincing him he hadn't done anything wrong.
I think the intention was to remove the body, but somehow that plan was derailed so John did some desperate half-assed staging instead. Is it possible he staged the body during the time he went missing? Or does that not work?

Even in the dark he would not mistake someone who is 4feet tall as an intruder. It is far more likely Burke swiped her with the flashlight he had next to him at the table while he was eating pineapple. It's possible he dragged her downstairs to the train room (he seems to lack the emotion necessary to understand his actions were very serious)and then realized she was not moving thus poking her with the metal rod but blood at that point had stopped flowing as the examiner on cBS stated. In his typical aloof fashion he headed back to bed only for Patsy to come down to get the suitcase and find her (or John). That explains the "what did you find?"That he asks on the phone. They didn't wake him because they didn't want to know the details.Patsy and or John realized who had hurt her and from there staged the scene. They knew he brought that flashlight down so they wiped it clean including the batteries. Patsy's paint supplies were nearby and from there the night went on. For some reason though they decided to call 9-11 versus risk taking the body with them on the trip that morning. I'm thinking t would've been too hard to find a place to place her or they couldn't bear to leave her outside somewhere. John's urgency to fly was to get Burke as far away from the house as possible. They truly loved those kids. Kids make mistakes and I am betting they didn't find her until 45 minutes - an hour or so after Burke hit her. That is why 9-11 wasn't called right away.

I don't think Burke planned or intended to do it. Kids squabble over the smallest things. I think he was mad about something (she took his Christmas toy, his pineapple, something..) and klonked her on the head with the flashlight without thinking of any particular consequences. The parents panicked and covered it up. Patsy wrote the ransom note while John staged the body, then they made the strange 911 call. They might even have worked very hard to persuade Burke himself that a bad man killed his sister.

Clearly the DA messed up big time. They need to release the evidence to be re-examined. Personally I see 2 scenarios:
