We use to have more than 100 kids per gender trying out for the U9 age group few years ago. What happened?

I agree. For the 08s they don't have the numbers to have 4 teams. They should have swallowed their pride and gone with 3.

So I’ve heard changes but they aren’t officially announced. I wonder if they will post the changes

They should post this week or next. They start early May. Coaches have recently been decided but not announced yet.

any big changes with coaches or pretty much all of the same returning?

Three bad ones are gone. Some new names were added. No way to know if the new ones are any better.

So are a few good ones. Stay tuned.

I don't know details of any teams other than ours.

I know you spend a lot of time following the national soccer scene but as you've evidenced repeatedly on this board, that doesn't mean you know much about what's going on in your own backyard.

It's stating the obvious to say that "if no top player left VYS, then VYS would be better." That's the same for every team, town, club, country, etc.

Madison Girls is having their best run ever in soccer because players from the one good VYS team (not teamS) are upperclassman but make no mistake, their best player is a product of McLean, having left VYS at U12 or 13.

I'd be shocked if more than 1 players leaves VYS for VDA. For the few players that are good enough, why go all the way to Long and Howsion parks when you can be part of better teams at McLean, BRYC, Spirit or FCV that are more conveniently located?

Using baseball as an excuse for VYS' overall poor performance can only be used on the boys side. But even that isn't valid as there are plenty of good boys soccer players in Vienna. For example, 4 of the BRYC players who won a national championship last year came from Vienna. It's just that VYS boys are so weak that most good boy players never enter VYS travel because everyone knows it's better to go to another club from the very beginning. (To help you out with your excuses for VYS, you could try claiming basketball is the reason for the lack of success on the girls side. With the success of Paul VI, Oakton, Vienna Vogues and even Marshall this year, you can start milking that.)

There's not a soccerplex but there are plenty of soccer fields in VYS. They're just spread out at elementary and middle schools i/o of being grouped together.

If VYS mandated just three simple things to the travel side coaches, much of the cloud would lift because the teams would win 50 percent more games:

1. Every team must use a possession style goal kick at all times.

2. At most three designated players on each team may play in goal during the season.

3. All corner kicks must be short corners.

I could not give an accurate count of how many goals I have seen VYS teams surrender. It's a lot. I'm an expert on boys' VYS travel teams surrendering goals specifically. Like 90 percent of those cheap, preventable goals were caused by goal kicks to the other team, indifferent goalkeeping by kids who didn't want to be in goal in the first place, and weak corners that initiated an opponent's counterattack.

So let's just do those three things I listed and we'll win more games and VYS people won't be so depressed all the time. Easy.

Reality in U.S. today (and probably for a long time to come) is that ethnicity and immigrant background is a big indicator of soccer interest and culture. Your typical northern Virginia suburban kid in Vienna is similar to the rest in the area. It's just that for some years now a number (but not all) of the more serious, more competitive players in Vienna area have gravitated towards other clubs like McLean, Bethesda South, and others. VYS not having really strong travel soccer teams has nothing to do with "Vienna is a baseball town". If more of the stronger players in Vienna played for VYS then VYS would have stronger teams. High school teams in the area are regularly in the mix for state championships.

Vienna is a baseball town? So once you are raised in that town limits you magically like baseball more than kids that live across the street in Oakton let's say? That's nonsense.
