I think that’s better than Tezlee but not by much.

Yes, if they raised Carly she probably wouldn't have the quality of life she has with her adoptive parents. I also don't think they are good parents to Nova so it's hard for me to think they would have been better parents 8 years ago. I think they had terriblely traumatic childhoods and their DNA had so much addictive tendencies that they never had much of a chance. Even when you give people tools (in this case the tool is money) it doesn't mean they know how to build.
I am curious as to why you think they are not good parents to Nova?
You don’t see how they aren’t good parents to Nova?
The instability of a mother who is constantly in and out of out-of-state treatment facilities and now a trial separation, where they will probably move back in together, pretend all is fine, and do it all over again when/if the mood strikes again.
A mother who is always high. Or sleeping. Or crying. Or complaining.
A clearly unsatisfied father. Unsatisfied parents in general.
Kids sense discord. Kids need routine and stability in their lives. Catelynn should have gotten her shit together before she introduced yet another child into their crazy world. Tyler should have fished or cut bait before he got Catelynn pregnant. Those poor kids.

Bristol: I actually do feel sorry for her. Essentially, the counselor advises her (and Dakota expects her) to avoid his triggers. That's DIFFICULT when everything triggers him. Sadly for both of them, due to his PTSD, she is supposed to allow him to emotionally abuse her so that he doesn't get triggered. And Dakota has poor insight at this time. Hopefully, he'll heal in time.
I feel really badly for Dakota. I feel like he's super broken and can't even help acting like a d$*(, but she does seem to push his buttons whether intentionally or not, I can't quite tell.
Agree it's better for them to be apart but it's an overall crummy situation for those kids.

After watching the most recent episode, he appears to be completely checked out of the marriage. I think the "30 day separation" will end in divorce.
