I grew up in very WASP culture and currently live in a similar culture. In between, I’ve lived on the LES, in Africa, and in Asia, a little time in Rome.
I appreciate parts of what’s considered “WASP” culture. Understatement, quality over quantity, hard work. The mystery to some is because these families are our “royalty” and their mores are unique. They also used to dominate NE prep schools, the Ivy lLeague, private clubs (to a lesser extent now for sure) so they’re a bit elusive.
I’m a psychiatrist, what I can tell you is the restraint has a dark side, strict and narrow mores can be suffocating. There’s a dark side to the tennis whites and clear complexions. Like any thing balance in life is important and any culture that is too insular is bound to have some issues. There’s also rampant substance abuse beneath the veneer.
They are not “our royalty”. No one on this thread could even name a modern-day WASP, except perhaps Tinsley, and she has really sullied her brand by being so public with her life. Actual WASPs are an anachronism, completely irrelevant to everyday life, other than their mythology. They are a dying breed, and rightfully so, as their main gifts to America were alcoholism, anti-semitism, and boat shoes.
