My Hispanic neighbors have made similar comments about how neighbors will discuss salaries. If someone doesn't make enough, they will cut off the relationship. This leads me to think that the general importance of elitism is fairly common in this area especially among educated immigrants.

Seriously. That was a huge breach of trust. I would be extremely upset if my spouse discussed my salary with anyone. Not their business.


I think it's cultural. In many American families it's considered to be extremely inappropriate, but I'm Eastern European and we discuss this freely. My Desi friends are the same way.



I'm the person you're responding to (who is extremely close with my cousins) and Surprise! I'm south asian (what you refer to as desi, which you should not do because it's rude and a little bit racist). So no, we're not the same way, no it's not cultural. OP is just really insecure. I'm guessing she's at least 5 years younger than her husband.
