Has the video been made public yet? Is it posted anywhere?

A lot of what is going on with community policing now is down to issues way outside their control- provisioning issues like having cameras and tasers at hand, training, mental health support for people they encounter, and repeat youth offenders who are not being diverted or supported by politicians or community members before they come the police attention. I pity police. Really do.

As someone who has known and worked with police, it's not all but there's a huge culture of violent people who are looking for a fight and who don't mind if someone dies. Watch the video of the car from Philly, a random collection of officers and they all jump on to start beating people. It's a violent job that attracts violent people.

+1 People who think cops are all just heroes doing their best crack me up. That's willful ignorance at this point. Look at Philly - they beat the shit out of a woman for no reason (no charges filed after she got out of the hospital, not even an allegation to be scraped up), ripped her toddler out of the car, injuring him in the process, and then posted a picture of a cop holding the baby saying what heroes cops are for "finding" this baby "wandering barefoot" and how all they care about is his safety. And people like PPP are up here eating that sh*t up with a spoon, because they have a childish desire to believe that if you put on the right outfit you're a good person, because then you never have to use your brain!

No. I think vehicular crimes are out of control in the district. Stolen vehicles careening and joyriding have hurt/killed pedestrians even without the police giving chase. I think the police should intercede when reasonably warranted. In this case, it sounds like they were pretty mellow and blinking their lights. This situation is very sad but I do believe they were trying to srop him to protect him (no helmet) and since he was riding on the sidewalk also to protect others.

They chased him with their cars in order to protect him from his helmetlessness?!

Hardly sounds like a chase. They were trying to pull him over for his helmet less ness. Fixed that for you.

He left. They followed. What would you call that? Would you rather call it "pursuit"? They *pursued* him with their cars?

Guys, I figured it out!!!

MPD is being reverse-racist by not protecting white moped riders without helmets from themselves. So lazy and reverse-racist! Thanks DCUM!

Why does that sound like a nice world to live in to you? Sounds kind of shitty to me, so instead I'll vote for leaders who will work against that. No one should die just because they are running from the police. Have fun in your fascist hellhole, Greg.

No one should run from the police! Mess up? Deal with the consequences like an adult. We live in a society of rules and laws. This isn’t Thunderdome

Ok, let's assume I agree that no one should run from the police (there's the faulty assumption that the police are 100% correct and honest, which is faulty).

So then what should be the consequences if someone chooses to run? An additional misdemeanor charge if caught? Summary execution? Something in between?

Sometimes pedestrians are summarily executed by people running from police or just already engaged in illegal behavior and driving irresponsibly. This has happened to folks in DC hit by stolen vehicles. This could have happened to anyone on foot hit by this kids scooter. This is primarily why police dont give chase.

So your solution is to allow people to openly break the law? If someone runs a light or does something illegal, I support the police 100% in going after that person. I would prefer to live in a safe environment instead of a state of anarchy.

Please tell me you're not that naive. I have little left to hope for now, and that's just too much.

No so much my solution as the stated policy of MPD. Discuss it with them. But as long as it's a policy, we have the right to expect them to comply with it.

An environment where the police engage in a car chase when a driver runs a red light, is not a safe environment.

I would prefer to live in a safe environment, where the police follow the police procedures about car chases.

So essentially you are saying let people do what they wish. If someone takes off, the police should go for donuts instead of doing something about it. Lovely. No wonder DC is so messed up. Not looking forward to seeing what happens if this stupid Initiative 81 passes.

Eh? No. I'm saying that:

1. The police should follow their own rules (that's law and order).
2. The police should not endanger the public through their actions (that's public safety).

Yes. That is how the law and it works.

Only chase a felon. It’s not just rue in DC. You sound completely ignorant of laws.

Teens in the burbs run from cops every weekend when their parties are busted. The consequence is not death.

It is if they run into the path of a moving car!

And when they jump in a car to flee the cops can’t chase them, and if the cop chases them and they die in a car accident.... the Potomac lawyers would own that cop.
