All the people I know who free feed kibble have obese cats. I’d rather have my cat meowing at me than having it be obese. Besides I only feed canned or raw food which is not conducive to being left out all the time. Due to Covid their two meals a day have turned into 4 smaller meals a day though.

I don't have an overweight cat, but cannot let him self feed because we have dogs. One dog loves cat food, and will eat it all. Cat food is very hard on her kidneys, so the vet scolds us if she eats too much cat food.

When we place the cat bowl on the counter, out of the reach of the dog, the cat gets pissed and slams it to the floor. He doesn't mind sharing with the dog. So, we feed him small portions as needed, and immediately empty leftovers. When the dog passes (she's old), we can go to a self feeding routine.

She growled at me yesterday for mopping the floor, but then chased the mop around and was mad when I stopped. Can't win, y'know?

My cat does indeed have a fountain! She has a very fancy fountain that filters the water and gives her different options to drink from.

She still likes to drink out of my cups of water and splash around in any messes she makes.

My goofy cat was upset that I did not call him when I was eating an orange. I forgot.. I had only one.
I never once new a cat who comes anywhere near an orange, this dude loves it and reports immediately when I eat one, so I always give pieces. This time I really forgot and he was really disappointed. He gave me a long look with his beautiful big gentle eyes. He got some papaya instead, we made peace.

Eh, cat dependent. We had no choice but to put our cat on a schedule or he will just eat all food given and still beg for more. Trust me, I tried. I've always had self-feeding cats before and never had issues with overweight cats. This one is just a hungry kitty and I think more easily bored. He's on a food schedule and then we regularly introduce new toys. It's the only way to keep his weight in check and even then he'll always be on the "big guy" side.

Also, OP, please get your cat a fountain water dish. Cats simply won't drink stale water unless in extremis. They want running water like drinking from the brook.

I feel for the PP with the hungry kitty. Ours is on a special pH diet and we can't serve him anything but prescription food. He's bored and kind of pissed off at all times. We are allowed to give him some very limited treats and I try to mix those up, but mostly it's just the same dry and wet food every day for years. Poor baby. I try to make up for it by being as kind as possible in other ways. If we change his diet, he'll get crystals in his urine and wind up in the hospital again.

Oh God, no.. he is not getting the right food. When a cat bites you he is telling you he is needing some nutrients he is not getting from canned.. dry food. Imagine yourself living on the cereal and can of spam all your life. That. Cats in nature get everything:

a mouse =with all it's stomach content .. grains.. etc.. and fur, and intestines and all.. that is full cat's vitamin table.

House cats needs bits of normal food like piece of boiled chicken or if you don't have one then just buy a slice of roasted turkey at your local deli.

Also,, either go to the Petco and buy cat grass or go outside and bring few nice stalks of long grass
and give yoru cat. He will love you to pieces.

Also some cats can not digest milk, other can. Try if yours will like room temperature millk or cream.
They love it and it is very healthy for him.

I made her get off the table in order to clean it for Sunday brunch. She expressed her opinion by trying to bite and scratch me. Will never adopt a feral again....

My cat is currently mad at me because I had to return to the office this week after working from home for a year. My poor, neglected kitty didn’t have somebody to give her constant attention throughout the day and she is angry about it.
