Through a 40 min virtual appt with a developmental pediatrician's nurse practitioner..who never got to observe her or anything. Just asked questions about her speech delay.

You should wait until you can get a proper in person diagnosis. If the initial diagnosis is wrong, the case file will reflect that.

My child saw 3 child psychologists, 2 developmental pediatricians plus ADOS test (all in person from children hospital) before they are comfortable to give out ASD diagnosis at 3. We started the journey at 18 months old when he failed the m-chat test. He did not have his first word till almost 3 year old, was severely speech delay. I can't believe 40 min virtual appt that give out ASD diagnosis unless your child has many ASD symptoms like from textbook.

Yours is how it should be done, but how this posters was done is pretty common.

If kid is showing anxiety, depression, anger, inattentiveness, highs/lows, hyperactivity, impulsiveness I would want a full diagnosis to determine comorbidities, where on the spectrum and any learning disabilities.

Yes. And it's too bad. My child had severe lead poisoning. I've spoken to other parents of severe lead poisoning. Our kids have a. similar profile and require similar services. But the only way to get anything approaching what we need is to accept the autism diagnosis. So I have accepted it for now.
It also holds back research because a kid with lead poisoning and ACB autism diagnosis is very different than a kid with regressive autism or a kid with oxygen deprivation at birth diagnosed with autism or a kid with fragile X... List goes on

We can expect differential diagnosis (speech delay ,genetic disorder etc.. ) if insurance can cover for all the conditions. Unfortunately insurance won't cover and we don't get the differential diagnosis . That's why it's called the spectrum.

This is not what “differential diagnosis” means.
