She’s right, though. For the vast majority of Americans, no one was freaking out about this until the night with the triple whammy of Trump Oval Office speech/ Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson diagnosed/ NBA players tested positive and they canceled the season.
I think that it first hit home when the NBA canceled the season. That is when it became pretty evident which direction the country was going to go with this thing.
It was evident to anyone following the news far before that.
Yep. Many of us canceled international trips and put off planing domestic spring break trips and started stocking up on essentials weeks and up to 2 months before that.
I am aware of that. But the NBA decision was a bit more impactful than anything that any one given person might or might not have been doing. You cancelled your trip, I opted to go on my cruise. I had a great vacation and you...did not.

There is a big difference between “freaking out” and getting on a cruise...
The fact that there were a ton of cruise ships debarking from the U.S, on March 7th and pretty much none of them had any Coronavirus outbreaks means that those passengers did a better job of assessing risk than the passengers who cancelled did. They missed out on a really beautiful trip. I feel bad for them.
Haha. Is that what you’re telling yourself?
Yes. You were wrong and I'm sorry that you overreacted and cancelled your vacation plans. You missed out!
I didn’t cancel anything. People who went on a cruise in March 2020 were reckless. Maybe they got lucky but they certainly took a huge risk for something that could have been rescheduled.

Huh? Lots and lots of this DCUM community (and many many others) were canceling trips including spring breaks and starting preparations. We knew what was coming because we watched it happen in other countries.
That’s not “freaking out”. That is making an informed decision.

This information was just broadcast on MSNBC. They interviewed two passengers on the ship who said they went on the cruise because Florida's governor said "people should go on with their lives" and President Trump said, "This will be over soon" (paraphrasing the interview content).
Tell me why we are bailing out the cruise industry again?
We aren't. Check the news reports like Wash Po. Because major cruise lines aren't headquartered in the US, they will not qualify.
Correct. “Despite Donald Trump’s repeated vows to bail out the cruise ship industry, money for cruise companies was not a part of the $500bn in aid for large employers included in stimulus bill passed by Congress on Wednesday.
Most of the major cruise operators register their companies in countries such as Panama and Liberia, thereby avoiding most US taxes and labor laws. Thus, the cruise industry’s trade group said on Thursday the companies will not have access to the US aid for large employers, according to the Washington Post.”
More here - there are at least ten ships with around 10,000 passengers stranded at sea right now. It’s totally wrong for the ports of origin to refuse to take these ships back IMO.

The companies can't have it both ways. If you don't want to pay into US coffers (taxes=social responsibility) then you can't expect the US to use our tax dollars to bail you out. Chickens coming home to roost.
