How did the NY guy get tested? He went to hospital with same vague symptoms, no known contact with an infected person, non recent travel to a hot spot?

There must have been some information that made them decided to test this guy.

They are still trying to figure this all out, but the article goes on to say, "“Countries that have relied purely on travel restrictions as the only public health intervention have not done so well, because when they have imported cases they subsequently have been caught off guard,” he said." Which I don't think you would say if you were not worry about transmitting the disease.

NP. I don't think the flu is as contagious because nearly everyone on Earth has had the flu before and has some sort of antibody. Even if the antibodies don't work on every strain of the flu, I heard it still blunts it. But I'm not a doctor.

I was referring to the R-naught (transmission rate), not the mechanism for contagion. The r-naught for season flu is about 1.3. They're still guessing at the r-anught for COVID, but it appears to be more in the 2-3 range (so maybe twice as contagious). Measles r-naught is up over 3, so definitely worse. These cites are a little old, but I haven't seen anything updated on the r-naught that seems more reliable. I think they are still just figuring it out, but anecdotes of contagion seem to indicate a high r-naught -- there are now a LOT of stories of drivers (taxi drivers, etc), health care workers, etc. catching it just from being in close proximity to the patient. The taxi drivers probably are not sharing a coke and a smile with their customer, and I would expect that the health care workers are all washing their hands or sanitizing quite frequently. I'm not an alarmist, but I think anyone that is saying that the r-naught is similar to usual seasonal flu just son't looking at the facts. When my husband got flu, I was able to avoid catching it by usual precautions -- slept on the couch, washed my hands, ran a clorox wipe over the door handles. I doubt the same would work for covid.
