To appear much wealthier than they actually are. OP can either buy a 1 ct natural diamond like the rest of the middle to upper middle class or get a 3 ct lab diamond and look like a baller.
It is bourgeoise.
This seems to be the only reason that makes sense.
Or maybe she just likes big diamonds?

It would be like 2.5-3 instead of 1, yes. So, a pretty significant change.
Shit. Yeah, do it.
which is very eco friendly

That’s what I wanted because I wanted mine made by lab techs making $20/hr with health insurance rather than people with no other options making $2/week in dangerous conditions. Probably neither scenarios are exactly what’s going on but that’s what I was thinking.
Another way of looking at this: people who only had the option to make $2/hour in dangerous conditions now don't have even that option. And I say that as a bleeding heart liberal who has spent most of her life in these areas of the world. It's never as simple as it may seem on the surface.
Oh Jeeze, you’re right, that kid is really going to miss doing backbreaking work for $2/hr. I mean yeah, he could lose a limb but after one day he’ll have made $20 and POSSIBLY have all of his limbs!!!
Look, I'm the person whom you are quoting -- I'm trying to put it in context. Reasonable and informed people can disagree on this matter, absolutely... but in my experience the people who aren't that informed tend to have a very black/white view of this matter. It's just not as simple as you may think (or at least just according to the quote you make).

And trends change. I’m old but all the newlyweds I know have big rings. When I got married, 1.5 was a big deal. Now they all look 2.5
