No one thinks this - especially not educators and social workers who deal with these heinous crimes all the time. However, why would you EXCUSE this behavior simply b/c this child isn't the first (or the last) to be raped by f-ing sickos?

Maybe not the first, or the only.... but this particular rape wouldn’t have happened if these men were deported when they should’ve been. Or prevented from entering the country in the first place.

He either of those happened, that child wouldn’t have been raped.

Anyone in Montgomery County knows about MCPS and how MCPS does little to keep kids safe from sexual predators. We have had numerous horrible cases of sexual abuse of kids, some by school employees (like the Cloverly teacher or the MS bus driver).

But personally, I find any story about child victims pretty horrifying.

I didn’t create this post, but go to the Maryland school’s board on this site. There have been tons of threads about the various cases - the Cloverly case, the bus driver case, the Damascus case (older, but still kids), the Vigna Casey etc etc.

So this site only posts sexual abuse that is decades old or from undocumented immigrants.

That is so odd. Why not care about all the abuse going on today, now, this year... by all men?

I want to know more details about how this girl was able to miss school without consequence.

Our ES in MCPS has a new system where you can just go online and note that a kid won’t be at school. Anyone can submit the form. Is that what was happening?

Did the parents know the girl was missing school? Does the girl have parents??

No, I’m a woman. I didn’t mean to ignore the very serious deficiencies in our criminal justice system. And the women coming here claiming asylum due to fear of sexual assault in their own country are doing so because they do not have functioning police or judicial systems, and can expect no legal redress if they are sexually assaulted. The victim in the Rockville rape case was only 14. Just three years older. And it was deemed ‘consensual’.

I hope this girl gets justice, but the US judicial system can be just as dysfunctional.

In this country, judicial systems are local in nature. So what happens in Mississippi isn’t what happens here. And the Montgomery County criminal justice system is one of the best. Rape investigations and prosecutions are victim-centered. At any point if a victim doesn’t want to proceed, the police and prosecutors back off. That reduces risk of re traumatization of the victim and helps a victim feel more empowered during a horrible situation. The detectives and prosecutors are specialized units that have been trained to provide trauma-informed approaches to evidence collection, and provided an understanding of trauma-induced behaviors. Just one example: Historically, if a rape victim lied about something, many prosecutors would presume the whole thing was a lie. And throw out the case. Now, detectives and prosecutors are clued in that certain behaviors (including lying about certain things) are in fact consistent with sexual assault trauma, and may not be the lie it seems on its face.

The county also provides wraparound victim services, including the Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program that provides a trauma-trained advocate for victims at every step of the process. It also includes ongoing counseling. If I or my child were raped, I’d feel more confident of getting justice here than in most places.

Is it perfect? No. But it’s leagues above most jurisdictions.
