Actually, Nebraska is the only state in the country that does not allow home birth to be attended by a licensed medical professional. Advocates claim that is the reason why you have these underground lay midwives operating in the state.

This particular midwife though claims she can operate under the framework of a “private membership association” that somehow allows its members to be exempt from pesky little laws about the unlicensed practice of medicine. It’s all explained on her website and she also went on a podcast a couple years ago and explained it.

I’m not against all home births. I wouldn’t have one myself, but I think it should be legal to do at home with a licensed doctor or midwife if that’s what the family chooses.

This case was egregious though. She had no license anywhere, and has only attended 50 births. I don’t think she even has a degree. And the baby was breech and they knew it.

They are. They get sued, they are regulated by the medical board and their state?

SOME get sued. And most get protected, but shouldn’t. The system is corrupt. It’s not just women of color who get neglected in the hospitals.

She has no license anywhere. She’s a lay midwife. She’s done 50 births.

The baby in this case was breech, and the mom and “midwife” knew it and chose to have a home birth.

Yes. There was a woman in my babycenter.com birth month group (don't judge) that decided to have an unassisted childbirth. She bragged about it the whole 9 months - all the stuff she read, how confident she was, etc. She went into labor and posted about it - her dumbass boyfriend had a friend over and he and the friend were playing video games.

I don't know how long she labored before she figured out she wasn't progressing. She eventually went to the hospital. Her baby didn't make it - had been deprived of oxygen. I think of her every once in awhile. She seemed not to really grasp the enormity of what had happened or was having trouble really comprehending it. I felt sorry for her but also angry at the waste.

The stillbirth may have been caused by her decision to labor at home but it may have happened if she had started laboring at the hospital. There's no way to know and no real reason to judge her. She went to the hospital, didn't have an unassisted birth at home. No different than if she had left for the hospital at the start of labor and gotten delayed in a traffic jam.

What? She absolutely tried to have an unassisted childbirth at home - ending up at the hospital in a worst-case scenario isn't a "get out of using good judgment free" card. PP says she was posting online about how her labor was going and intentionally didn't have even a midwife or trained doula there to give medical advice, that is different in both kind and degree than getting stuck in traffic on the way to the hospital.

this baby could have lived 100% if the mom got a c-section. the guilt here is all on the mother.

Pregnancy and childbirth are actually dangerous. Why so many women refuse to believe that is mind-boggling to me.
