Charles is 70. Actuarial tables would suggest he's not going to be king for 20 years.

I don't think this is entirely true. We have the official crown jewels, which are owned by the state and copies of which you see in the Tower of London.

The Queen's personal jewel collection will have pieces that technically belong to the crown and the rest are her personal items. Much of the current collection was acquired by Victoria and Queen Mary, I believe, and passed down on a personal level rather than "crown" level.

I'm sure every piece in the collection is officially either crown or personal but most is the latter. Going by precedence, which is what she will do, most of the personal jewels will pass to the next monarch, Charles.

The Queen will have personal pieces that she will bequeath to specific heirs. I imagine all the female heirs will get something. Male heirs will likely get something which their wives will wear.

The vast bulk of the collection will be passed down to the next monarch regardless of gender. In this case, it will be Charles who inherits the collection. Camilla will have access to it. Then when Charles dies, William will inherit the collection and Kate has access to it. Just like almost all the Queen's personal art will go to Charles, and then to William, with a few bits left to the rest.

I think some of the other royal houses put the non-official state crown jewels into a foundation for the benefit of the monarch's family, so various family members can wear pieces from it subject to approval of the monarch.

It will be interesting when the Queen dies because her estate will be subject to inheritance taxation in a way her father's wasn't.

Doesn't work like that. It would have to be an Act of Parliament and Charles would have to willingly give up the throne, just like his great-uncle King Edward VIII did.

Since he's already married his mistress, he has absolutely no reason to agree to that.

Not sure if Camilla will get all the royal jewelry because there's still some uncertainty about whether she'll be called Queen or Princess Consort and she's not the mother of an heir to the throne. I suppose she could get divorced or die in an untimely way, but the probabilities on either of those events are pretty low.
