From Serial podcast's new episode.
No, they are still being investigated. They might have been involved together or separately.
One alternate suspect:
Two different people called, several months apart before the trial, and tipped off the police that they had over looked a suspect who had motive. He was heard saying he was upset with Hae. That "he would make her disappear. He would kill her." He had the motive, opportunity and means to commit the crime.
One had a connection to the location where her car was found
One or both have relevant criminal histories, mainly after Hae was murdered. One for sexual assaults'.
Sarah from Serial said she knows who they are. One did take a few polygraphs. One was briefly investigated, but not with much vigor.; he is now in prison for sexual assault. Because the prosecution didn't mention them by name, Serial isn't going name them either.
Jay's testimony is also under scrutiny because his story kept changing, with input from the cops during the interviews. Additionally Jay has changed his story after the trial. None of it adds up. Prosecution told jurors don't worry about questions about Jay's testimony, because the cell phone evidence backs up the story (cops helped) Jay form with each interview. Cell phone evidence is not sufficient with or without Jay's poor testimony.
Bill Ritz, a detective, was accused with misconduct, manipulating, mishandling evidence in another case. That man was exonerated in 2016.
