Admittedly I haven’t seen either The Wife or A Star is Born yet but I was pretty stoked for Glenn Close. I read something about how Gaga herself was awestruck by Close so I doubt she’s mourning too much about it.

I don’t know that Hollywood hates Gaga, but at least HFPA wasn’t giving up the biggest acting globe to someone on the scene for 2 seconds. If the globe went to Glenn Close solely for The Wife or a nod to her body of work, she’s a deserving winner.

I think both of these movies/biopics were dramas about musicians, not musicals, per se. No dancing sequences, catchy-type songs and the like. That is why they were not considered musicals.

Agree on the distinction between musical and movie about music.

Bohemian Rhapsody was an amazing movie. The fan reviews are MUCH higher than that critic ratings on sites like rotten tomatoes. So it seems to have resonated with audiences. Maybe SBR would have been a better Freddie, but Malek was excellent.

I also loved a Star is Born, but not as much as BR. Gaga should have won an award, not so sure about Cooper.

The thing is Hollywood doesn't like Gaga, they find her pretentious, and phony, fake. They found her campaign fake and she was fake. Bradley Cooper is getting rep for being snotty and difficult too. So, yeah, it is about entertainment politics.(because it is wrong for a singer to be difficult among great acting egos?!) Plus this is foreign press, and Queen is European band, you need to ask how many of them actually were into Live Aid and Queen in 1985 and how many of them give a crap about Gaga? The answer is clear, they care more about Freddie Mercury because they remember it. I am not saying it is right or fair, it is just movie industry and preference.
