NP. Because the reason they are allowed to walk out is because they are constitutionally allowed to exercise their first amendment rights in this manner. I don't think they should be punished for something they are constitutionally allowed to do. I think an unexcused absence because they weren't in class should be what happens. The detention is punitive. Any civil rights lawyers care to opine on this

Are you sure your LCPS MS didn't give alternative outlets? Ours did. They had some activity with nametags and a moment of silence in the hallway. The students and the admin came up with it together.

But even then some parents are complaining and lot of it has to do with the bad reporting by the students. So make sure before you go all nuclear on the admin that you have the full story.

OP: I didn't write this, but schools exist to educate our children. This is an opportunity to encourage civic engagement. These kids are finally going to change our idiotic gun laws -- schools should be encouraging that, not suppressing it.

Look, this is really simple. What is the standard repercussion for a student who misses a period of school unexcused? Is it the same as what was being doled out to the 90+ kids who participated in this walkout? If yes, then move along, nothing to see here. If no, then you should absolutely write to the superintendent and raise all kinds of hell. There should be a repercussion for civil disobedience, but it should not be a backlash for political reasons i.e what is clearly happening in Cobb County, GA.

BTW, not that it matters, but I'm a center-leftist father of a 1 year old who I hope grows up to do exactly what your child did.

I'm assuming students were advised beforehand that walking out would be against school policy --but admin would be available to supervise and ensure the safety of students in the event they left the building???? They likely also warned students there would be consequences. In that case, no one should be surprised. Some school districts tacitly supported others did not. Your child needs to learn to follow the rules or face the consequences. And she must follow the rules of HER school district--not mine. Just as we can't arbitrarily decide to follow the laws of other countries that seem more palpable to us.

I think the school was as fair as they can be by offering slap on the wrist choices.

Exactly. Schools get in trouble if a kid leaves with a non-custodial parent instead of getting on the school bus--and you think it acceptable to walk out?
