Why?
Anonymous wrote:Are you sure your LCPS MS didn't give alternative outlets? Ours did. They had some activity with nametags and a moment of silence in the hallway. The students and the admin came up with it together.
But even then some parents are complaining and lot of it has to do with the bad reporting by the students. So make sure before you go all nuclear on the admin that you have the full story.

OP: I didn't write this, but schools exist to educate our children. This is an opportunity to encourage civic engagement. These kids are finally going to change our idiotic gun laws -- schools should be encouraging that, not suppressing it.

You really believe that?
Yes, absolutely.
Um. Do you read the newspapers? Watch the news? Ever?
Yes. Which is how I know I’m right about this. The public opinion on this is very clear.

Or did she get detention for not coming back in or for skrewing arpund instead of peacefully protesting?
I would go on a fact finding mission before raising hell at the school.
90 kids walked out. They stood quietly in front of the school for 17 minutes under supervision of school administrators. They were brought to the cafeteria and told they had to be punished. They could choose three lunch detentions, Saturday school or one after school detention. They are required to write an essay (mine will compare and contrast LCPS handling of today with neighboring districts.)
In other fact-finding news, I have determined that you are a twat.
NP to this thread who did not read past page 1, so not sure if this has been addressed.
I'm assuming students were advised beforehand that walking out would be against school policy --but admin would be available to supervise and ensure the safety of students in the event they left the building???? They likely also warned students there would be consequences. In that case, no one should be surprised. Some school districts tacitly supported others did not. Your child needs to learn to follow the rules or face the consequences. And she must follow the rules of HER school district--not mine. Just as we can't arbitrarily decide to follow the laws of other countries that seem more palpable to us.
I think the school was as fair as they can be by offering slap on the wrist choices.
If your child walked out and ended up being injured in some way, what then????[/quote]
Exactly. Schools get in trouble if a kid leaves with a non-custodial parent instead of getting on the school bus--and you think it acceptable to walk out?

Anonymous wrote:I fully support that consequence. Taking a stand for what you believe in comes with consequences if you do so in a manner that goes against the rules. I have zero problems with peaceful and non disruptive protests like this, but they are against the rules. I think it waters down these protests when you expect not to have any consequences. Look at all the protests demanding civil rights, etc. They were all prepared to face face far worse consequences and did so because the cause was that important to them.
