One could argue that high achieving, higher income kids are left behind by the traditional school system in DCPS. Unless you can buy a million dollar house in upper NW or Cap Hill for Brent, then your kid is screwed.
Nonsense. I know parents who may or may not clear the "high SES" bar, including single parents, who rent two-bedroom places in the Oyster, Murch, Ross, Powell, Watkins or Maury Districts in order to use those fine elementary schools. Watkins hovers on the brink of Title 1 status, yet its white kids scored highest on the PARCC in the city this year, for both English and math. No, I'm not a Watkins booster; I'm just really impressed.

You should feel guilty, that is appalling. For all you know BASIS will have opened another middle school by then and you will have no trouble getting in, or you may receive a job offer that requires you to move somewhere else entirely. A lot of things can happen in two years, denying some other parent an elementary school you won't even use solely on the possibility that it might decrease available space in a middle school in two years is just awful. Be supportive of BASIS and they will open more schools.
Denying some parent? Come on, none of us has a say in BASIS' expansion or maintaining the status quo. Zip, even if we let Ward 6 know how we feel (individually or collectively). We're relieved for logical reasons. Sue us.

not true. I submitted comments and DC's elementary classmate's parent testified in writing.
You submitted comments against the expansion because you wanted to preserve "your" lottery spot in the middle school?
No, not at all-I don't have anyone kids left to worry about elementary lottery placement. An expansion was a terrible idea and detrimental to DC's public elementary schools, students, in particular ones with SN and those living a ways away from the location yet actually are the ones who need more options. Basis is great for older kids with supportive parents and no special needs.
