Fill a cooler up 2/3rds full with hot water. Add 3-4 ounces of lavender oil. Put the helmet in chinstrap side up and hold the helmet submerged with a heavy kitchen pan weighing it down below the surface.
Leave it for a few hours, let it dry out overnight and you will have yourself a clean and (thank god) agreeable smelling helmet.
I do it mid summer with elbow pads & shoulder pads every year. Keeps them sanitary & keeps that "July stench" down.
Go on Amazon and purchase the detergent called Hex. I don't know about helmets, but we do throw our son's shoulder and elbow pads in the washer with the Hex. I love this detergent. I started using it for my own workout clothes. It is heavenly.
Thanks for both recs (and the suggestion re Target)!

Bobby Horsey is coaching lacrosse at Bullis. I am not sure if he is coaching middle school or upper school, but he is coaching.
