+1. He and the ex were on-again off-again for years and were in an off-again period when he hooked up with JA. The ex got pissed because she figured they'd get back together per usual but he decided to move on instead.

Plenty of people are around on film sets. Someone is bound to talk for the right price even with all the confidentiality stuff.

I think that they genuinely care about each other but they were beginning to have some major compatibility issues and it all finally just hit the fan. Brad probably was becoming less discrete and Angelina had had it. Might as well split while he's still earning lots of $$$. Ya know, for the kids.
And he kept nagging her to take better care of herself, and she didn't want to hear it. They had fights about her weight loss. So now she doesn't have to hear it anymore.
Yeah, they were making each other miserable. Hopefully now they can both focus on themselves and their own happiness.
