Sorry, but they are. I've listened to several GDS moms at holiday parties and soccer games earnestly recite the Obamas-really-wanted-GDS-as-their-first-choice story. But I haven't heard it in a couple of years.

That's just so much BS.

Remember more than 70% of GDS applicants also apply to Sidwell. So many of the families at GDS are at their second choice school-hence the inferiority complex.

Please. These comments are from the Harvard troll and children on summer break who have nothing better to do. The schools the Obamas considered doesn't matter at all to anyone serious about deciding on the best option for their children. Besides, most of the children who apply to GDS (or the other selective independent schools) won't get accepted. You choose a couple schools that you think will best serve your child and see which ones they get in. All of the selective independents are great and it's silly to doubt that your child wouldn't get a great education at your second or third choice school. And, those with children who are competitive for Harvard (or any other extremely selective college) know that someone else's child getting in isn't a reflection of the school's quality or your child's chances.

GDS has its own set of pretensions. As your own post suggests.

This is exactly what was meant earlier by the reference to "status-crazed" GDS parents. I'm sure some are fine, but generally they come off as incredibly obnoxious and desperate to make GDS into a little mini-Sidwell. Hope the attitude doesn't rub off too much on your children.

Anyway: from friends, travel sports, and other activities, we know WIS students from the past few years who have gone to Columbia, Stanford, LSE, Cambridge, Oxford, Brown, and Yale. I have no idea if any have gone to Harvard.

Those who know GDS would never describe it as a mini-Sidwell. Indeed, the academics are comparable in many respects, but you don't have to put up with all of the Quaker pretensions and distractions. GDS has truly amazing students and faculty, and the arts arguably are better than Sidwell.

So it's really Burke (or Wilson or Walls) rather than WIS that GDS competes with?

Have you ever BEEN on the WIS upper school campus? It's in the middle of a nature conservancy and is a completely open campus surrounded by woods.

It's a different orientation. GDS historically likes being part of the urban fabric, being of and for the city.
