She can do what she wants. And I can think and say what I want. She and the others are purely doing this as a sport. The one kid applied to 18 schools. 18! That goes way beyond fine tuning. He's probably only visited a fraction of those.

Nonsense, if you are white, legacy with the last name of Bush you can apply to only one school. The rest of us intellectual mortals are rolling the dice. The lady was smart to spread out the risk. She is not White, privileged, legacy with Daddy on the Board. She is an outsider. She is an immigrant. For all we know she may be very concerned about how these schools and the establishment view immigrants and immigrant families in America given the current US political cycle and climate. She would be foolish to apply to only one school even being number 1 in her class, number 1 on SAT, ACT, with all the awards and accolades. You see when you are on the other side of the tracks you understand fully well there are no guarantees and some whimsical decisions are made based on how you look, talk, and where you come from. She knows this. Her parents know this. Many others on the other side of the track know this. Many in America know this as they are creeping out of the woodwork to support the likes of Trump and Cruz --professed Ivy League grads--who simply want to deport "immigrants". Why would any immigrant family take any chances with applications to the same Ivy alma maters of a Cruz and a Trump? You might be flat out rejected at Princeton, Harvard and Penn by the likes of a Trump or Cruz on the selection committee! Why take a chance? Why risk it if you really want to school in the Ivy League. There is really nothing to lose by keeping all the options open.

We understand why you don't get it? Immigrants increasingly do not trust the process here in America. With Ivy Leaguers like you, Trump and Cruz why would any immigrant apply to only a few schools? De facto, they do not have the same predictable guarantees and constitutional rights as you in the US.

With college and university decisions and the big money and potential big debt at stake this is an increasingly big decision in one's life. This girl is savvy. She understands what's at stake, the big bucks vs. big bust/debt. From a purely financial perspective, in today's market, I advise the same strategy. It may ultimately translate into big long-term savings.

As a parent, I would have provided her the same counsel. Take no chances with the American system. It's unpredictable.

I only included information about myself when the PP said something about community college. Sorry - I "just" went to lowly Columbia undergrad & grad. And I have friends from all 8 Ivy League schools. I am familiar with these schools - are you?

Given how widely different these schools are these students' motivations for applying to all are pretty clear. Saying that doesn't take away from their accomplishments at all. Certainly they are very talented and are likely to be very successful. Yay - kids who applied to all 8 Ivy League schools just to say that they could. That is why we are all talking about it now. That is what they wanted after all.

^ and if they didn't want us all talking about it then they would have quietly kept this within their own circle. But obviously they wanted to share that winner pic of all eight of their acceptance packages.

The "off-shore" slave traders had more success on the West African coast...the mosquitos amongst other surprises were increasing health threats with further interior penetration!

How does this conflict with the earlier post? The vast majority of enslaved Nigerians were apparently NOT shipped to the United States. The Americas (as referenced above) includes North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. It appears that Nigerians tended to land in the part of the Americas that is not the United States. Is this controversial?

The rule that has always worked for me - with affirmative action the minority looses credibility. While the majority looses opportunity. I do not involve myself with those who I feel may not be truely capable and that has always worked to my advantage. Learned this from my parents
