+1 Couldn't have said it better. This is an emotionally charged time of year and people are just making things up. As someone who is making calls to accepted GDS families, I have no interest in whether they accept or not. Of course, I love the school and want to sing it's praises, but I recognize that every family is weighing many considerations at this point. I'm simply inviting them to the community and addressing any questions. That's all. Unfortunately, the loud-mouthed bitter posters will continue to dominate these posts with their bizarre rants and misinformation.

GDS and Potomac are two very different schools. I live in VA and my child goes to GDS for HS. After touring both, my child and I both felt the differences between the two schools. While both are stellar academically, there are many differences politically and socially. Most kids I know going to GDS would not have a hard time deciding between the two schools. The same holds true for the kids I know that go to Potomac--no way they would want to be at GDS.

Has anyone also considered that some parents might have called another office asking and the person who answered (probably not a receptionist, FYI) said he/she was unsure but could transfer.... and then the person hung up assuming "unsure" means no.

Lots of problems at GDS right now -- fundraising, discipline, workload, governance. In your position, I'd seriously consider Potomac.

Parent of one kid who went to Sidwell and another to GDS. Also had choice of Maret (one of the kids). These are all excellent schools, but different in important ways that will be obvious if you visit and talk to parents. Also know parents at Potomac who are very happy. None of these are bad choice; all excellent in their own ways. By omitting NCS and St Albans and other schools, I do not mean to denigrate -- I just don't have a good sense of those.

I don't understand the hysteria. Everyone is notified via snail mail. Those that are accepted receive an email with a contract. End of story. This is how it worked last year as well and I don't remember any fuss then.
I think that the furor is over the misinformed and wrong receptionist in the admissions office who incorrectly told understandably anxious parents that no emails were sent out.
Is this really such a big deal? Sorry I can't understand. Last year we didn't receive our e-mail until later that day. People were posting in DC Urban Mom. I thought we were not admitted. I never thought of calling the school the same day the admissions decisions were out (talking about planning...) When your server has to manage sending out so many e-mails some might get earlier to their addressees than others.
And please, do not crucify the receptionist. She might have committed a mistake, not a crime.
And regarding the anxiety. Some of the calls to the school were made around 10-11am.... IMO is somewhat worrisome that some people get such level of anxiety over a school admission -and do not have the patience to wait until the next day (or the end of the day at least) to learn about if their DC have been admitted or not.
I don't blame the receptionist at all. I blame the admissions office.

If true it is the Madoff scam of DC privates. Seriously, why all the haters on here of GDS. We are grateful to be accepted. Feels like how people hate Duke Basketball or the Cowboys of the early 90's. Jealous much. It is a hard school to get admitted to as are Cathederal schools and Sidwell. We are excited to get GDS as one of our top 2 choices.

Yes, it is incredible. Specially when such twisted theories are taken for granted without a blink. How can someone think a top school (i.e. top professionals) will design a system that is basically -at best- a teenager scheme? :shock:

You assert that admissions relies on contemporaneous reports from parents who are calling admitted students? That is patently false and just an idiotic supposition on your part. I can't even fathom how little you understand school admissions.

Maret e-mailed WL notices today. (Unfortunately, I know that first hand.) Thus I assume they also e-mailed yeses. Maret managed to do this in a fair, professional and timely manner.
I would be careful about putting too much stock in what anonymous posters write on here. I know several people who posted totally made up stuff about acceptances, etc on this site today just to mess with stressed out type-A parents. There are a few vocal people who bash GDS all the time. It is not a stretch that someone just made the phone calls up
+1 There is a lot of negativity and anger in this thread. So much energy could be re-directed to more important things... My apologies, but some of the comments reminded me of high-school: "My DC has not been accepted but I really don't care because it was not our first choice, AT ALL[u], you know, and additionally the receptionist was wrong about the e-mails... Inadmissible!" (?!) Poor receptionist (independently if it is true or untrue that she did a mistake, either way is not nice).
Anyhow, I am truly sorry for those who were not accepted and really wanted to me admitted, it might be the case next year (or you might get off the WL) GL.
