If you were taught s a child that certain ethnic groups were evil, would you want your children to be taught that so they could reject it on their own later? would you want them to be taught that girls are not as good as boys?

There are ways for your kids to learn about religion without being taught to believe things that you yourself have rejected as an adult. Please consider a unitarian church or an ethical society.

I can clear up your confusion. The churches do not represent a higher entity, some benevolent being that protects its adherents.

The churches represent people getting together in community to worship the higher entity and it is subject to the same human frailties as any other institution of men.

You appear to put higher expectations on a church than a school in terms of how children are treated and so you excuse the latter but not the former. But the two situations are not really different. If anything, a school that is set up solely to serve the interests of minor children and not a broader community should have the highest expectations put upon it in terms of dealing with child abuse.

THere is no excuse for child abuse anywhere. However, schools act quickly when abuse is reported and don't send abusive teachers to other schools or systematically cover up child abuse at the highest levels, the way the church has. School don't (can't) cloak their criminal activities under the guise of serving a higher being.

Agreed that "churches do not represent a higher entity, some benevolent being that protects its adherents" but that's how they present and sell themselves to believers -- and use that false perception to draw in its victims.

If you'd seen the movie "Spotlight" you would have seen one of the victims trying to explain how his abuse happened by saying, "How do you say 'No' to God?"

This discussion has been very helpful in understanding the mind of of someone who will defend the indefensible. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of still practicing catholics, who raised their children in the faith are not as dug in as pp and just continue for the "tradition" putting the evil in the back of their minds, instead of trying to justify it.
