the mental excuse is thrown out there by those who dont want to even consider or discuss that there is a race component in the situation.
if its about race or race is involved, people have to talk about it and its easier to discuss the broad problem of mental issue as opposed to race. admitting a racial element to it means you admit we still have racial issues in the country and to some, people think that the race issue is primarily a figment of folks imagination as opposed to real.

His comments about race, that he told one of the victims, sound very paranoid. And for the record, mental illness effects all races.

I've got that clue. Where I'm a bit behind, though, is that mass shooters all seem to actually be mentally ill white guys.
The along Island Railway mass killer was not white, nor were the Beltway serial killers, Mohammed and Malvo.

I mean, my husband loves his assortment of guns. He also knows someone who bought a damn bazooka gun at one of those gun fairs. No background checks required. Now what does one do with a bazooka gun

Well many already have armed guards. It would be nice if they could report all the issues that were stopped by off duty armed police who were just going to church on their day off. I know of one personally. But that news is not as interesting.

If he sat in the church for an hour, he may have left DNA and or fingerprints. They had a picture of the car's license plate, and there was an insignia on the suspect's shirt. All climes. I have no idea how they identified him, but they are releasing his information as their prime suspect. I guess it wasn't a wig after all. Weird.
The surveillance cam caught his car - which probably included a shot of his plates - which let them narrow the # of white male young suspects with that sort of hair.
The eye witnesses and DNA comes later.

Mental illness is an insidious, awful thing that is manifested in myriad ways.
Crazy comes in degrees. I am sure most people have some degree of crazy. Stop making excuses for this criminal. He wasn't too crazy to not know what he was doing was wrong. He disguised himself and possibly wore body armor to protect himself.
Not PP, but how is saying he's crazy an excuse? There is no excuse. But to perpetrate something like this, you must have issues. You just have to. Doesn't mean you are incapable of planning and executing the plan.
Thanks - I am the one to whom pp was responding. I don't understand when people say calling someone crazy is excusing their actions. That is dumb as hell. Crazy or sane, if you are dangerous you need to be locked up somewhere. How is that excusing anything? This right here is how and why we have broken mental health system in this country, we think identifying and understanding mental illness is excusing it. Stupid.
If you want people to accept mental illness as an excuse, then you have to accept it for all groups of people. It is always an excuse for whites, but other racial groups are automatically assumed criminal without any regards to their mental state. Now, that's dumb as hell.

That is not an excuse -- dude sounds crazy, VA tech dude was crazy. Just because institutionalized racism exists and paints alleged black criminals as typical of all black people does not make any of these other nuts any less crazy. The two things are not mutually exclusive. I am a black woman who very clearly sees racism and crazy ALL AT THE SAME DAMN TIME.
The suspects comments to a witness seem to clearly indicate this was a racist attack.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this guy was found to be out of his gourd - but with regard to the point I made earlier white guy who kills someone (sociopathic anomaly)...non-white person who kills someone (typical black thug or common Hispanic gang-banger) is the whole perception issue. Crazy comes in every race, religion, gender, sexuality, and tax bracket but there is a definite double standard when it comes to how crazy white is perceived and how crazy non-white is perceived. this is BS, you look at the facts. a person killing scores of strangers is likely mentally ill and not a criminal. a criminal kills for a reason, does not go into an elementary school to kill first graders, goes into a bank to rob it and may kill if is convenient. plenty of white organized crime (mafia and so on) made multiple killings and nobody thought they were crazy. a latino going to a movie theather and shooting spectators is liekly mental ilness, a latino killling members of a rival gang over a drug deal is not mental ilness, like no mental ilness is likely involved when gangs of white bikers face each others with guns. Timothy McVeigh killed scores of strangers and was white, he was executed and certainly he was considered a criminal and terrorist, not crazy. the Virignia Tech shooter was Asia and the circumstances of the shooting made clear is was insane. I am not aware of a mass shooting of random strangers made by a single black male. even in the case of the Savopoulos killings, people said that while the guy is a criminal (and his record proves it), there might be some level of mental ilness involved because simply you do not kill and torture in such a cruel and unnecessary manner unless you are not totaly sane, even if he was aware of what he was dling.
