To me, it's always been symbolic of rednecks and yes racism. I'm a Jew who was not born in, but grew up in, Appalachia. My perception of the confederate flag is a direct reflection of that upbringing.

Slavery was a terrible chapter in both American and world history, one whose effects are still felt today.

The annihilation of native Americans was also a terrible part of our history.

Disenfranchisement of and discrimination against women and non-whites were both wrong, as well, and some aspects of the discrimination continue today.

Those who currently most commonly carry and display the Confederate Flag embody the worst of those histories.

Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.

Start with the fact that it STILL is intractably entangled with white supremacists and hate groups. The photos that were posted all came from within the last 2 years, they are a depiction of what is still CURRENTLY going on, not of what once was. That's not "my" truth, it's THE truth.
