Speaking of reinforcing stereotypes, one of the more prevalent stereotypes out there that just irritates the hell out of me is the notion that of that there exists some mythical black leader who speaks for all black people.
NEWSFLASH: That is some straight up bullshit. There is no office called “Black Leader.” No one was ever elected as the leader of the black people — not Jesse Jackson, not Al Sharpton, not Oprah Winfrey, not anyone!
Black people are not monolithic. They are as diverse as any other American ethnic group. They are Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, and Independent. They are liberal, conservative, moderate, concerned or indifferent, rich, middle-class, and poor; and they have the same leadership as the rest of America — the President of the United States and the United States Congress. Blacks do not have separate leaders who speak for us.
Can we dispense with that dumb ass stereotype please?
Probably not. The same people Who spout on about black leaders are the same people who would scream "Gloria Steinem doesn't speak for me. All women are not the same." Or "the kkk doesn't speak for me!" It's very hypocritical and most of these peeps are blind to it.
Then WHY has no one outwardly told Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to shut the fuck up and go home? Because last time I checked they've stood at the podium of every black race fueled case I've seen in my entire lifetime.
Because the white media needs a black person to speak on their segment on the subject.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:The point of looting is to show you have power over something when you otherwise feel you do not have power.
It's like kicking the dog when you get home from work after your boss yells at you. Transference.
Fine. But saying, "well the looters feel frustrated" only works in the short-term. What about the future of this neighborhood. People still live there, work there. On a small-business level, who will want to invest in this place. What stable families will want to stay. The violent individuals are doing long-term damage.

This.
Believe that at your peril.
They had a AA pundit on the radio this morning and he was saying that a lot of the old heads in the 1960's have always complained that this generation showed extreme apathy on Civil Rights issues. He said that if any good has come from Mike Brown's death it is that this generation of young educated AA's and young Liberals of other races is starting to become energized on these issues. These are the leaders of the protests in Ferguson and the ones in NY. So keep focusing on Sharpton and Jesse - who are only relevant in their age demographic. But those are not the AA leaders that will be front and center in the next few years.

Who is condoning "this looting behavior"? In whom is it reinforcing stereotypes -- in the people who hold these stereotypes? And what do you think would "advance the discussion"? The rioting in Ferguson seems to me to have advanced the discussion a whole lot. If not for the rioting (and the appalling police response), none of us would ever have heard of Michael Brown. He would have been just another anonymous young black man shot dead by a police officer.
