Apparently not much. DH is doing a temporary contract in Northern Ontario. We have a Honda Fit and have no troubles getting around. Get proper winter tires and learn to drive on ice and snow. An SUV does not drive better in the snow and ice. A truck does not drive better in the snow and ice. The only thing that drives better in snow and ice are proper tires, caution, and smart, defensive driving. If people are sliding, then it is going to fast on improper tires, plain and simple.

Today's weather is a perfect example why DH should listen to me and buy an SUV. I saw so many small cars like the Volvo sliding today, but then what do I know.

If it's an old car, then the insurance company does not cover for the replacement of the vehicle. Just covers for damage to the other car/property.

Yes, the car IS replaceable, whether you grew up rich or poor. It is a thing, however, lives are not replaceable. The accident could have resulted in much worse consequences with severe injury or deaths.
