Back in my day, you didn't have sex in HS until junior or senior year and only with a long term BF...otherwise you were labeled a slut. And parents weren't cool with putting their teens or Tweens on BC, so girls were careful not to do anything that could result in pregnancy.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? I'm in my 50s, and kids were sexually active and quite casual about it when I was a teenager. I remember girls talking about their sexual needs and feelings in what was a newly healthy way at the time. Of course, there were always those who acted out because of low self-esteem, and there always were and will be guys who would push any agenda to get sex. It did feel like we were making progress as girls and women, though. There were lots of sex manuals about pleasing both partners. Now there's just a massive amount of porn where guys use women like willing rag dolls. Porn is made for men to jack off to.

I've noticed over the years that girls are going backwards in how they accept porn behavior as norm, go along in their own objectification, and perform services for guys without valuing themselves or realizing that sex is supposed to be mutually pleasurable.

Porn is everywhere, and is doing a good job of teaching boys that it's normal to objectify women, and that women exist sexually to please them. That's what porn is made for. And when you objectify people, you can rationalize using them for whatever purpose you want.

I knew plenty of girls who were raped when I was in college. Typical scenario: be at a frat party, or at a guys' group house. Have too much to drink. Get raped. Rarely did anyone report it. The guys were usually drinking too. The most predatory ones didn't drink much, since this is how they got sex regularly. This is what certain males do. It's the nature of the beast, and how we set up our society is how we control it. It's an ongoing battle to empower women in every way, and instill attitudes in both sexes that limit objectification of anyone.

Colleges have always protected their young white men who commit crimes.

It's really hard to believe a group of young men who worked hard to get into UVA and presumably care about their future do something so violent and criminal. I mean that's like a war crime type situation.

If it's true, those guys should get life sentences. I'm just having a hard time believing the story as written.

There were 38 reported rapes at U Va last year. Only 9 of them were investigated by the university.

It's still fictionalized for TV. The court system doesn't work in real life the way it works on TV. Evidence doesn't work in real life the way it works on TV.

Here's another story, from a lawyer representing a family. She alleges that when a student went to UVa medical services for help her records were altered by a nurse (who was employed by the University) to show that 1) was not injured in the assault and 2) to destroy the pictures of her injuries that were taken.

I can see your point, but after being a rape counselor, I see this as a brilliant strategy and very well thought out. Seven united against one, and making an real effort to make it seem like an enjoyable evening that she participated in willingly. Self preservation by the guilty. It happens more often than you think. A gang rape -- they all stand together, especially if she did not go directly to the police. Even then, there is always the "consensual" argument.

What would be her motivation to lie? What would be Rolling Stone's motivation to publish a completely uncorroborated story - that obviously took the author months to research - and risk their own reputation? Like someone else pointed out earlier, UVA has record of this case bring brought to the university or else they would have outright denied it. The last thing we need to be doing is questioning the victim.

There are mentally unstable women, just like there are shitty men. Maybe, she had an issue with someone in the frat. Maybe she is enjoying the attention coming from this claim, even if she's remaining anonymous. To be honest, I really don't like suggesting that she is lying, especially when she very well might not be, it's a very ugly accusation to make. But let's be real. Women are capable of bad behavior too, just like men are. I don't necessarily think she is lying, but I don't think the evidence is there to make the assumptions that everyone seems to be making.

You are living in an island could denial. This isn't some random allegation, don't you think journalists vet sources before publishing? If not, get familar with the real world.

Every source in this article is anonymous. And in the end, "Jackie" claims that she doesn't yet feel ready to press criminal or civil charges. But she feels ready to approach Rolling Stone to give it national attention?

Pretty sure that Rolling Stone approached her for her story, since UVA is under investigation for failing to address this issue on campus. Jackie's story isn't the only story out there about UVA.

How would Rolling Stone know who she is?

Someone told them. They started asking questions and someone pointed her out as a potential story.

There is a long history of rape denial at UVa another student and her mother started a website about it after the daughter was raped in 2004. Rape is part of the culture there.
