Just want to say I am a dog lover and have had dogs all of my lifetime. My Dad insisted when I was a child if I was going to have an animal, I teach it properly, which meant when I took the dog for a walk I didn't let it pee or poop all over the neighbors' yard or their mailbox. For those people that feel this is acting insane by not wanting dogs peeing on their mailbox, they should live in Florida where it gets 90 degrees most summer days and the stench will burn your nose. I too have dealt with this issue with inconsiderate neighbors. I have actually had to take a shovel to get rid of the huge heaps that one neighbor's dog leaves. What really annoys me is watching one lady continue to stay on her cell phone while her dog leaves behind the mess of a small horse. All we ask is for some common courtesy from our "so called neighbors". P.S. For the guy who thinks his neighbors don't complain about his dog peeing all over their property, I would love to hear their version of the story.

This sounds laughable until you deal with a huge dog and an inconsiderate owner who not only allows the dog to pee but do all their business at my mailbox since I'm the first house on the corner. I'm really looking for an answer that won't hurt the animal but trying to reason with the owner is useless. The dog has more common sense.

I’m a dog owner. I keep my dog out of people’s front yards. He’s allowed to go in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the curb. I don’t allow him to pee on anyone’s personal property. I don’t let him pee on mailboxes, yard signs, decorative rocks, fences or trash/recycling cans at the curb. I say “no” and choke up on the leash so he can’t reach these items. I try my level best to move him along so that he doesn’t poop near anyone’s mailbox or driveway or car parked at the curb. I do my best to remove every bit of poop from the grass. I pick up all of his poop and dispose of it appropriately — never in someone else’s residential trash can. Some of us really try to be considerate.

I have a super strong sense of smell but dog pee outside doesn't bother me. People putting their dog's poop in my trash can does, though! I bring my cans inside the fence to keep this from happening; otherwise I'd have 20 bags of dog poop in there by pick-up day (we're the closest cans to the street).

I suppose I'd try the pepper idea as long as research didn't reveal any harm it could cause to any living creatures or plants. Or the shiny embellishments. But ultimately it's outside and a place where dogs are expected to pee so you may have to let this one go.

I ordered some from Amazon and it was some kind of garlic powder with pepper something. The pepper wasn't really a factor - the red color was mostly to make the dog owners think it was pepper. Citronella oil watered down in a sprayer can help cover dog scents.

This thread reminds me of a measure an entertainment district in Hamburg took to protect its buildings from (human) urination. The video is in German, but I think you'll get the idea! Their slogan was "we pee back." Basically, they used a coating that repelled liquids so enthusiastically that the pee would splash back on the offender's legs and shoes. I don't know whether dogs would care, but if they do it might train them to pee somewhere else:

Get some spray and spray the area.

Someone on another site said 1 part pine cleaner to 9 parts water in a spray bottle works. Spray the whole mailbox area top to bottom, daily. I've also heard vinegar works too. Good luck
